I had a left Hemicolectomy last May....Diagnosis was good...non aggressive Tumour, no Lymph Nodes cancerous...though EMVI. However, Oncologogist said no Chemo. needed. I went with her expertise. Had CT Scan recently...showing Lung Nodules. Colonoscopy last week was clear...but needed a Pet Scan last Thursday. Results today is I have secondary Lung Cancer. 2 Nodules of 2.5 & 5.3mm in upper right lung. Why wasn't I offered Chemo. at the time?

  • Hi

Really sorry to hear that . It’s such a difficult situation just now as well .

The Oncologogist follow the Nice guidelines for when to give chemotherapy . They use a risk / benefits analysis as to either it would cause more harm than good when a patient is a lower stage and looking favourable for a good long term outcome . Undoubtedly it’s not foolproof as there is always a group that faces recurrences .

It is hard to get your head around . Did they suggest a treatment plan yet ?

Secondary lung cancer has a few treatment options . My mum had surgery , no chemo and that was four years ago and has not experienced any further issues and certainly no obviously loss of lung function . Once you get all the information together you will be better placed to tackle this but I can totally understand how horrible a shock that must have been .

    Take care ,

  • Hi I am in the same boat as you just further on a bit.

I was told I needed no chemo further treatment after my Apr surgery, my 1st CT scan showed 2 nodules on left lung surgery removed them Jan 2020.

I asked why wasn't I offered chemo and was told my histology report was very good and sometimes you can get a few stray cells, so after my lung surgery I asked if I could have chemo as a mop up but was told no so fingers crossed next scan clear all seems weird to me but I no expert in any of this just keep trusting the professionals.
