Hi everyone,

I have finally had a meeting with the cancer surgeon and the oncologist.

The oncologist has given me a commencement date for the radio therapy and I have the chemo tablets.

It has been verified that i have late stage 3 rectal cancer that has infected 13 to 17 lymph nodes, but the surgeon is not certain if they have been infected, he said that they could be inflamed.

The meeting with the oncologist lasted less that 7 minutes as he is very pushed for time in this region of france., thus I am turning to the people on this site that have been a huge help to me and my wife to date.

The chemo drug that I have been given is Capécitabine 500mg tablets. I was told to take 3 in the morning 30 minutes after my breakfast and another 3 in the evening 30 minutes after I have my evening meal, monday to friday for 5 weeks, this is in addition to radio therapy which is also monday to friday for 5 weeks.  The first session with the radio therapy is for 20 minutes and then the remaining 24 sessions are for 10 minutes each. Looking at the internet, it would appear that the chemo dosage is very high, 3000mg per day for 5 weeks. I will be asking the oncologist next tuesday if the dose is correct, however i value the views on this site.

I am scared going into the chemo and radio therapy, in terms of tiredness, sickness etc, what have peoples expreience being during the 5 weeks.

Thanks a lot for listening.

  • Hi .

I can’t remember what actual doseage I was on during radiotherapy but I was of the impression that it is quite a low doseage compared to the doseage given if needed after an op which I based on your weight and height. I think the tablets are to enhance the effect of the radiotherapy but there’s no harm in double checking with the oncologist.

Its difficult to predict how a person will respond to the treatment - I was given a cream to deal with any soreness, diarolyte for diarrhoea and anti-sickness pills but didn’t need any of them. You will be checked regularly by the people doing the radiotherapy so you can tell them if you’re suffering from any side effects. I was lucky enough to be able to carry on working throughout my treatment which helped keep things a bit more ‘normal’ for me but others have suffered from increasing fatigue as treatment has gone on so listen to your body and rest when you need to.

Glad to hear that you’re about to get underway

    Take care

    Karen to my rescue again.

    A big thanks.

  • Hi

the dosage of capecitabine seems right, my husband was on this along with radiotherapy for five weeks, he took them like you morning and evening his dosage was the same but with a 20% reduction because he has a kidney condition.

    Good luck with treatment xxx

  • Hi I had to take 5 tablets in the morning and 5 in the evening. I had 25 sessions so sounds very similar to here. My main symptoms were fatigue and sickness which I had before the treatment started but it was just exaggerated . They gave me some tablets for the sickness which worked also towards the end of the treatment they gave me creams and lotions for a sore bottom. I took the time off work throughout the treatment but went back a week after as my job is manual quite hard going but manageable. Here the oncologists check you every week your bloods etc so tell them any problem however small

    Good luck

Hi Goslow1,l  it looks like you and i are starting our treatment together, i was given the same meds n same dosage yesterday, my Radiotherapy starts Monday also, and its a 5 week cousre, you have asked the same question as i was just about to ask, the people on here always have the right answers, and like you im feeling scared, dont know what to expect by taking the meds n having the radio, but hopefully we both will get the results we want after the course has finished, i was told yesterday i would be having surgery after , thats the part im dreading, but keeping my fingers crossed this tumour shrinks enough, so i just have keyhole ,i wish you good luck, for the next few weeks, it would be nice to keep intouch with you throughout the next few weeks, then we could both be on the winning side ,and find out how this treatment is going for us, take care x.

    That would be great.

A little background on me, I am 67 or as they say in France, I have 67 years.

I was told that I would have a 6 week gap after the chemo, radio therapy, and then surgery. Every Thursday I get my white bloods tested.

    Goslow.

I think i would have flipped if i had got that information.

Where are you in your treatment, my bloods are checked every Thursday, however I have to go to the local laboratory in the town, they then send the information to the hospital with a copy to me by email.

Thanks for talking with me, it really does help.

    Goslow.

Thanks very much for the information. i tried sending you a private message, but I failed, I guess it must be my age, I found the private mail but could not find how to send a message.

  • I think you have to do a friend request first, then once accepted by that person you can then private message.
