My husband's cancer was becoming resistant to the chemo. He has stage 4 colorectal cancer with mets in the lungs and liver. Before he could start the new chemo he developed sepsis. He started to recover then sepsis struck again..then again with dehydration too. He's so tired spending most of the day in bed. He has no interest in anything. It's nye on impossible to get him to drink or eat enough. He has Ensure drinks and I'm amazing myself at all the morsels and drink types I offer but hes due a ct scan tomorrow and says he doesnt feel well enough. The scan is to show what's happening with the cancer. I know there's a chance he may never be well enough to restart chemo but feel we need to know what's going on. He's passing blood every day. I've had the community palliative care nurse in today but is there more I should or could be doing? Ive virtually given up work. We dont have carers and heard nothing from the district nurses yet. Is this the beginning of the end??
G'day Mew29, I was treated for bowel cancer (Stage 4), a clever Surgeon, cut out the offending bit, plus. Near on two years later, I'm doing well, but tired at times (I just go to bed for an hour or two, OK). I was on morphine for some 5 months, did not look in the mirror, as I was so skinny. However, I refused Chemo, on the basis that too late.
I would suggest, as well as high cal liquids, which I guess you have been provided, loads of water, 2lts plus per day, just to prevent dehydration (An Elderly Asian Nurse told me that, as I reckon she wanted rid of me)!
As for your Hubby passing blood, demand a Doctor, and do it now! Not sure why Pallative Care Nurse has not reported the blood issue.
Chase it up today!
PS:- My wife, very patient person, took care of me for some 2 months, not the first time, as I had a stroke 11yrs ago! think she took care of me for 6 months on that occasion.
You are not alone!
Thank you crashcentre.
All the doctors know about the blood. I've even taken a lump of something ( not a,blood clot) he passed to the hospital for pathology to look at as unfortunately they could not remove the tumour but gave him a twin-exhaust stoma instead.
I'm also not new to the caring role as I looked after my mother for 11 years when she had a stroke which developed into vascular dementia. At the time I would have received more financial help and been allowed paid time off work if I'd been pregnant! Its probably still the same.
Good luck with your continuing battle and thank you for replying. It helps.

Hi Mew29,
Good to see a McMillan Nurse advising, they are the best for Cancer aftercare and advice to loved ones. Give them a try.
Why did I not consult aftercare? I did, McMillan Nurses, but decided that with my wife's help, and my own strength, I could tackle the issue on my own. Besides, I did see people that I thought needed more attention than me. However, I do promote and denote.
I'm believing that Hubby needs some attention/advice from McM.
It appears that you have an offer, take it with open arms!
Take care
Crash
Should also comment that I'm an ex rugby player, so along with ex team mates, plus 2 Sisters and a brilliant neighbour, all Nurses, I have good support outside of hospital. However, I do have a 24hr tel no for Cancer Nurses, if I need, just seemed strange that you do not? I live in Plymouth, Derriford is my hospital, care cannot be faulted. Talk to the McMillan Nurse, good start. Try not to get stressed. Despite the horrors of operation, bits hanging off here and there, we can survive and thank our carers, eventually!
