Hi,
I've been a member of this community for well over a year and has helped me through some though times. Although, this is the first time I've posted to seek help and advice.
Some History:
Scan in June 2019 was indicating at the time that the cancer was still evident, not big enough to biopsy or carry out a resection. The decision was to leave for four months and then work out what action to take to remove. On a positive note, the scan carried out two weeks back showed the lung clear, so great news, something I was not expecting.
Current Issue, and one I'm seeking help with to discuss with others that might be in the same position?
During this period the perineal wound has been problematic. I was unfortunate to be hit by infection straight after surgery, not sure if this has had an influence on the perineal wound not healing. Scans have shown that there is a collection in the void left by the surgery. This has been removed once by draining, but a week later back to where we were. Obviously the main focus was on the cancer over the last few months and then take care of the persistent perineal issue once that was done.
Over the past year I'd seen an improvement with regards the perineal with the discharge slowing down, even through the chemotherapy, where I thought it would deteriorate. This all changed mid August when at that time the wound became active again to the point I'm using large wound dressing to capture whats draining.
I know that the perineal is problematic and can take a period of time to heal, but I seem to be going backwards, with little help from the surgical team.
Has anyone else experienced this on a similar timeline?
Has anyone been offered treatment to fix?
Apologies for the length of post!
Regards,
Jaydee
Hi Jaydee,
Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the perineal wound. I don't have much good news to offer, I'm afraid. I had my surgery in 2012, and 7 years on the wound is still not healed properly. My surgeon said that there was a 50/50 chance it will never heal, and that radiation to the site will have weakened the tissues in the area. On top of that, I also have Diabetes Type 2, and was told that the wound would take much longer to heal because of that, and there is a great chance that it simply won't heal.
I get good times and bad times - the good times when the wound does seem to have healed and there's no discharge at all, and bad times when you wonder where it all comes from!
After my surgery, when the wound wasn't healing, I was given further surgery to try to fix it, but it didn't work as expected.
I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but hope it helps a bit.
Linda :-)
Hi Linda,
Thanks firstly to replying to my post and sharing your experience to date. It does help, even though, as you say, it’s not what I was looking for. It is strange to think where it all comes from when there’s a lot of activity from the wound. Back in April this year the discussion with the surgical consultant was a referral to a plastic surgeon in the nearby city to get it sorted, some sort of skin grafts. Speaking with his team last week, this option has went quiet! Not sure if this was the procedure your team tried at the time? Hopefully I can get some info on here about the skin graft process and the success rate.
Again thanks,
Regards,
JayDee
