Hi my mum was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer which spread to her liver in June. She was told three months of chemo then scan then see if they could operate or if she would need more chemo. She had her scan on Monday and was having her last chemo treatment today but she has been told her liver bloods are high they still gave her the treatment but she has to come back in three weeks and have more chemo because of this. We aren't due to see the oncologist about her results for another two weeks so we just a little worried what this means. She has coped so well with the chemo and feels so much better so we were hoping it had worked. I don't know if anyone else has been in this situation who can offer a little light
Thanks for any help anyone can give
Hi
I can understand your concern but chemo often raises liver enzymes which can settle once chemo has stopped if it is chemo that has caused them to rise . One of my mum’s has stayed raised and never dropped but it’s not at a concerning level . If it had been of significant concern they would not have given her chemo . Her levels will have been looked at before her chemo began this cycle .
Not sure about the chemo next time aspect as normally the scans are sent back to the MDT for review , particularly in a stage 4 situation and they decide the next step in the process . They can take a wee while to review etc . Someone told my mum on her last chemo she may get a further two cycles which threw her . However when she saw the consultant her scans were fine and she went to surgery instead . I would definitely hold off till you see the consultant as it’s often generalities that don’t necessarily tie up with the plan for the individual.
You could also phone the helpline here 0808 808 0000 to see if they can shine any further light . That was certainly our experience .
Glad to hear your mum is doing so well . That’s very encouraging.
Take care ,
