My husband is a self employed, sole trader carpenter,  i am employed full time elsewhere.   Our children are adults and still live at home. My husband has just had rectal and anus removal, stoma bag, and large abdominal incision.

My question is ... which benefit do we claim? Previously he had contribition ESA when he broke his heel 5 yrs ago.  Benefits are so confusing as one now supercedes another!  Just wondered what others claimed for recently please?

    Hi again

You are right in saying that benefits are confusing and can be a minefield to navigate through

Can I suggest that you give our Macmillan welfare rights adviser a ring they can help applying for benefits and tell you which ones to apply for and they can be contacted on

    0808 808 00 00.

If there is anything else you need financial help with we have other experts who can help you just ask the adviser when you on the line, the advice is free.

    Hope this helps

Thanks ian, will ring them tomorrow.

  • Hopefully the advisor will be able to get you all you need. The Macmillan benefit team sorted me out very quickly, and were so helpful I cannot overstate the difference they made. However, one thing to keep in mind that whether you claim ESA or Universal Credit can depend on where you live, as UC is not yet active in all areas of the country. That aside, you should definitely put a claim in for PIP. I was absolutely stunned at how swiftly I was awarded the benefit. While there are many horror stories in the media about people being denied benefits for the most outrageous reasons, sometimes the system DOES actually work. I put my swift decision and success entirely down to the help from Macmillan. I cannot thank them enough!

I tried to ring them today but the line was down.  I will definately try again tomorrow. Thanks for your suggestions and advise.  They all seem to supercede another benefit.  We had esa years ago but its all changed now and more complicated.
