I am 3years post op for colorectal cancer unfortunately i have developed a parastomal hernia and a prolapsed stoma. my stoma is no longer functioning properly. I have consulted with my surgeon who has informed me that if he operates there is only a fifty fifty chance of success and i could even end up in a worse state than i am now. is there anybody who has been in this position or had the surgery if they could let me know how it went i would be very grateful. it would help me make a decision wether to go ahead or not. thank you

    Hi Julie

I am story to hear about the hernia and prolapsed stoma.

Was the surgeon referring to the hernia repair or revisiting the stoma to sort out the problem.

I am concerned that when you say your stoma ""is no longer functioning properly" this in itself should be a good argument for the surgeon to revisit your stoma and resolve the problem, do you know as your stoma is not function properly is because you have a blockage which possibly be the need for surgery.

Normally the only reason for a parastomal hernia repair operation would be because it's become unmanageable or causing a problem.

But revisiting the stoma would make sense to repair the hernia.

I've had a parastomal hernia for 5 years and it was repaired last year because my I had a strangulated bowel which needed surgery and it made sense to repair both at the same time, that was in July last year and in January of the year I had an appointment with a colorectal surgeon for a different matter, he commented that my hernia was back but he didn't think he would operate at that time, the original surgeon told me that the repair would last up to about 5 years, in fact I think he should have said 5 months because I've had this stoma for a year now and its size of a half melon.

If it comes to revisiting your stoma and having the hernia repaired I would make sure that you get the full information and how he will do it and the following articles should be a help in knowing what to ask

    Prolapse and retracted stoma article

    Prolapse article

    PARASTOMAL HERNIA

I would ask what he meant by "a worse state than you are now" and keep asking for an answer I think I could hazard a guess but let's see what he tells you.

I hope you find the above of interest and you make the correct decision of any surgery

May I ask that you keep in touch and keep us informed how you are getting on and which you decided to go.

    Best wishes

    Ian

Thankyou so much for your reply i just wanted to clarify about my stoma not working properly. i recently had a scan and there is no blockage. the opening to my stoma is now right at the top. it has prolapsed and is now running the wrong way it is going against gravity like a u bend so it takes hours to work and doesnt always completely empty .It gets very painful and is very tender.

    Hi

Noticed you just created this blog about hernia and a bad back.

Was this meant to be posted into your Bowel Group as no one can reply to that blog post.
