Rectal cancer

I finished radiotherapy and Chemotherapy tablets three weeks ago. I was advised not to adjust my low fibre diet for at least two weeks. We’re all different and I’ve had to ignore this advice as I was in agony with constipation. I do have to be careful not to eat too much fibre each day, but it’s trial and error at the moment. Struggling more with bladder control. If anyone has any tips I’d really appreciate it!

  • Hi ,

I am really sorry I can’t answer your question but going to bump it back up to the top to see if anyone else can .

Hope you get some solutions .

  • I had lots of trouble like that and had to address constipation as I had had re-section surgery, and didn't want to put undue pressure on the joins. (Sorry if too much info!!).

Doctor prescribed senna but I preferred dulcolax as, for me, it is more predictable. Took it last thing at night, then 6-8 hours later, job done!

But I had IBS type symptoms for months after chemo, finally fixed when my onco put me on gluten free dairy free diet, and pharmaceutical probiotics. (Not the stuff sold in yoghurts etc!)

    Best of luck

  • Hi . I’m sorry that your post seemed to sneak under the radar and hope things are now improved.

Well done on getting the chemoradio out of the way - you can tick that box off now. Have you had your follow up scans yet? Hope the bowel and bladder issues have settled down now. My friend who went through treatment at the same time as me had bladder issues but they did calm down after a few weeks so hopefully yours has too. She also has a glass of prune juice first thing in a morning to ease her constipation.

Bowel Cancer is very treatable but the treatment unfortunately does take time and the waiting between chemoradio finishing and your scans is a bit of a drag. Is your next stage the op to remove the cancer?

    Take care
