anyone out there suffering the after effects of radiotherapy as I am ?  I new it wouldn't be good but nobody told me how bad it would really be. my treatment finished just over a week ago, I haven't been out of the house since apart from a night in hospital with excrutiating pain and burning , but I'm hoping that things are on the mend now as things seem to be calming down and atleast I can walk about now.  My sympathy and love to anyone out there who is suffering as I did x

  • Hi my husband had five weeks daily radiotherapy and it was around the same time as you are now that his symptoms were the worst. He listened to his body, slept a lot, used a cool pad to take some of heat out, lots of symptoms aching, tired burning, going tonpass water more up in night great deal of fatigue , but I am happy to say these passed gradually.  He did push himself too much just after treatment finished and I think it didn't help at all.

listen to your body, keep taking temperature, rest, take fluids, he used paracetamol or  cocodamol for pain relief remember what we were told was it is like having major surgery and you wouldn't expect to be up about doing all sorts straight after surgery, yet same thing, body been attacked and now needs to recover.

i know it comes as a shock after elation of treatment and it being over.

best wishes and take care x

Hi, the worst part of the treatment is the 2-4 weeks after it finishes. Although I had a temporary stoma at the time ( now permanent), I still had to pass mucus and it felt like sitting on top of a volcano!

Rest assured though, it soon gets better and about 4 weeks after the end of the treatment cycle I was out and about and going to the beach and walking a lot.

Best thing is just to put a clean towel or flannel in your mouth and literally grin and bare it as you pass mucus/motions.
