Hello everyone I am after some advice please. My 84 year old mother has lost a lot of weight recently and had some diarrhoea, blood tests came back showing ,something was wrong so they arranged a ct scan which showed a mass in her bowel. She is now waiting for further tests and we are all obviously worried sick that this is bowel cancer. Could the mass be something else? I've only recently lost my dad to cancer and I'm terrified. Thanks so much for reading this and hope everyone is well.

  • Hi ,

I guess it could be benign but if it should be Bowel cancer and the location is favourable she may very well be fit enough for surgery . Depending on many variables but some surgeons are using keyhole surgery which reduces the impact of  open surgery.

I totally understand that your very concerned that you should lose her but there is every possibility that they may be able to offer her some help .

A treatment called Papillon therapy is suggested by NICE for elderly patients with rectal tumours where surgery is not viable . So depending on the location of the tumour with the colon there may be other avenues to investigate if it turns out to be cancer .

I wish her every success and hope they find a good solution.

    Take care,

My 93 year old otherwise fit Mother-in-law had a mass in her bowel which turned out to be benign after two colonoscopies a few months apart and two lots of biopsies. They said that in a younger person they would have removed it because the tumour may have some malignant cells in them which were not sampled and anyway they often turn malignant over time but given her age the risks outweighed the benefits. Her CT scan was clear for signs of spread. She is to go back to them if she has problems but otherwise no further treatment required.
