Good evening folks. I’m curious to know if anyone has suffered the same side effects as my husband. He had a laparoscopic right hemi-colectomy on the 14th May. He had an epidural in for 2 days and was in hospital for a week. On  about day 3  he experienced shooting pains down his thighs along with the sensation of dripping liquid down them. That stopped after a couple of days but he has been left with numb thighs, the middle top to outer part on each side. The doctors in the hospital were non committal and he has since had an MRI of his lower back. He goes back to his consultant on Thursday for all his results and I’m assuming she will also have the MRI results. Has anyone experienced this and if so, does it gradually disappear. Thank you for reading my long winded post.

  • Hi . I’ve no personal experience of this but I remember reading a post on the Bowel Cancer UK board about something similar and they were told that it could be due to being put into a funny position during the op or maybe that a nerve has been pinched. I’ve attached the link below (hopefully)

Hope things start to improve for your hubby soon

    Take care

  • Hi yes I had this on both thighs and around the area of my incision (I had a Low Anterior Resection) and I have an arthritic back and was on the operating table for 10 hours. It did get better slowly, very slowly, several months to a year from memory as I think that nerves grow back very slowly. I also had left foot/toe numbness which I still have nearly two years post op. It was felt at the time that it was nerve damage caused by laying in an awkward position on the table. I felt better once the abnormal reactions stopped, a kind of cold rush sensation whenever it was touched. Lack of sensation was better for me than abnormal sensation.

  • I suffered He same in one of my thighs, I had surgery in Dec 18 and asked about it feeling almost sunburnt but you can’t see anything it just feels really weird. My oncologist said because they take a lot of bowel and a lot of lymph nodes out it sometimes damages the nerves down the leg and said it should come back eventually, I’m still waiting for the numbness to go but I suppose nerves take a long time to heal.

Thank you, good luck with your treatment.

  • Hey Miss V,

I recently underwent a right hemicolectomy for a small bowel NET tumor.  They removed part of my large and small bowel along with the appendix and 14 lymph nodes.   As soon as I recovered and was in my room I noticed my right thigh has been numb and sometimes feels like it's burning.  They did the surgery laparoscopically so I was only in the hospital overnight.  I sure hope the numbness goes away.  I had the surgery one month ago today and it hasn't changed any yet.  I also had a very sore right shoulder that I could hardly move and was told a gas bubble probably made its way up there.  That, luckily, has gotten better.

    Good luck,

    Tim

  • Hi

i had a right hemicolectomy about 18mo ago, laparoscopic.

i also have noticed what i can best describe as 'altered sensation' on the surface of my outer left thigh, right thigh seems more normal.   i think the response above by lilnlarge probably seems the most logical explanation. mine is still there 18mo on

shoulder would have been gas bubbles from when they 'bloat your stomach' and yes dissipates quite quickly

    Hope you mend quickly

  • I'm now coming up to 5 years after and the numbness and pain in my leg has mainly gone. Every now and again I get like an itchy feeling but it's not sore now, so I guess people were right the nerves do eventually grow back.

  • Thank you for that information.  Hopefully mine will grow back as well.  Donr care for this numbness/burning sensation, but I can live with it.
