I have an appointment with the colorectal team on Tuesday after quick referral from GP.

I'm currently very scared and anxious as I've lost a lot of weight in a short space of time including muscle atrophy. The worrying thing is I'm eating well.I tried to do some gardening today but felt very weak, faint and breathless. I called 111 and they have arranged an out of hours GP appt this evening

I just have a real  dread about this and fear I missed the bowl symptoms I had for a while. They were noticable but not debilitating.

  • Hi David ,

Welcome to the forum . Firstly I hope your appointment with the GP went ok last night . That sounded a bit frightening . You are doing all the right things getting the correct medical team involved,

You would be amazed at the amount of people who come here to check out genuine symptoms which have the potential to have a difficult diagnosis but investigations reveal something that does require treatment but not cancer . My own mum had advanced cancer with a secondary spread with absolutely no symptoms. We encourage everyone to get checked thoroughly and find out what is the root of their own problem which you are well on your way with .

If it should be Bowel cancer the good news is their is lots of very successful treatment options and it can be very successful. My mum was a late stage diagnosis and still doing well ten years later . We will also be here to support you through in that situation until you are safely getting back on with your life .

Hope you are keeping batter today .

    take care ,

  • I had an appt today with colorectal Consultant. Have now been referred for colonoscopy, endoscopy and CT scan. They said will all take about 2-3 weeks which I think is normal amount of time.

So more waiting I guess. My dilemma is whether to go to work. My job is sedentry but I have a long and physically draining commute into central London. I have taken last two days off sick and feel better when resting. Even mild exertion now leaves me feeling weak and breathless but want as well to keep normal routine. I plan to talk with my boss  but not sure.

    Hi David,

I don't suppose you have the option to work from home? It is difficult to know whether to talk to the boss or not, and I guess that depends on factors such as how much you trust that person and the culture of the organisation. My manager was very understanding with me taking more and more time off due to increasing abdominal pain before my diagnosis, and after my first surgery but before bowel cancer were confirmed the company I am currently working at extended my contract. I am a contractor and it would have been within their rights simply not to extend the contract. But not all companies and managers are the same, so it is a difficult one.

Anyway, I hope you get the appointments for the rest of the tests sooner rather than later.

    All the best,

    Yolande

  • Thanks for replying Yolande.

I don't have the option of working from home but fortunately have a supportive boss and work colleagues.

I work in the NHS so also have a level of security with sick pay etc. My gut feeling is to give it a try tomorrow if my boss is agreeable and see how I go.

Also knowing there is more waiting when your body is not ok is really difficult. At times struggle to manage my head and fear the worst. I have called the support line a few times and they have really helped with that.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Victor Jars

I fully understand your worries I was in this situation too. I work for a large contract caterer so do not have the option of working from home. I was diagnosed in March and inbetween all the appointments decided to carry on working my boss has been very understanding . Although it was incredibly tiring I found that work gave me some sort of sanity and release from my stresses as the waiting is the worst. Now I have started treatment I have taken time off. I wish you the best of luck

    Best wishes

  • Thanks Peacock for your kind thoughts.

I plan to give it a go tomorrow and take it easy. I do agree having another focus at this time  would be good for me.

    Kind Regards

    David

  • .

Glad to hear that the wheels are now in motion to get you fully checked out. The waiting for scans and meetings is pretty stressful but it sounds like your team are being very thorough. In the meantime please do not be tempted to google - wait until you’ve had all your tests and results and know what (if anything you’re facing)

I worked as much as I could throughout my treatment - it kept my mind occupied and I could almost pretend that things were ‘normal’. Would your boss maybe let you work a shorter week or maybe start an hour later and finish an hour earlier to avoid the rush hour?

Glad to hear that the support line has helped and please keep us updated on here

    Take care

  • Hi Karen

My Boss has suggested I can leave a bit early so plan to try going in tomorrow.

I'm  avoiding searching up every symptom/pain/ twinge in body as know I'm hyper sensitive to any changes and just freaks me out more. Problem is I'm trained as a nurse so I don't think that knowledge helps sometime.

I do think having the appt and know now what will be happening over next few weeks has helped a bit.

    Thanks for replying
