Exercise after rectal cancer surgery

Hi All,

After surgery to remove a rectal tumour positioned at 10 cm from the anal verge (and therefore no colostomy bag)  would it be possible to lift weights and do exercises such as barbell squats and deadlifts or would this threaten to open up the join ends of the surgery?

Many Thanks.

Hi, are you trying to put me to shame asking about exercise!

You don't say how long ago you had your surgery and if you have seen your consultant recently, this may interest you and give you some guidance

    Resuming Normal Exercise.

Through the first six weeks following surgery, you should not perform any exercise (or activity) that involves straining through the abdominal region. That means no weight lifting, crunches, or anything else that greatly increase the pressure through your abdominal cavity

You may want to click on the green text below and open up the page on an Exercising program.

I assume that you are doing your exercises at a club perhaps if you discuss it with the personal trainer, if they have one, or someone similar they could help you with your progression and work out your personal timings and goals.

I can appreciate that you are eager to get back in the saddle but take it easy and listen to your body when you doing any form of exercise and I know that I don't need to say this but if hurts or you feel a strain stop and rest.

Good luck in getting back to your exercise regime.

  • Hi, I had surgery last March and then six months of chemo. I joined the gym in the May and was doing Bodypump classes twice a week, so weights with lots of reps and squats. I also did Pilates so lots of ab work with no problem at all. I'm very glad I did it, it meant I was still relatively fit once my chemo finished.
