Hi all

my Dad has completed 9 sessions of chemo out of 12 and went up to have his 10th one the other day but got told he has a temperature and a urine infection so couldn’t have his chemo so was prescribed more antibiotics which never cleared urine infection up last time they said he had one and had to stop chemo again. The antibiotics made him feel awful aswell.  My Dad had a TPE in September so has 2 bags has anyone else had to stop a session due to an infection? He also got told to ear lots of greens and bananas for potassium but he ate a banana and it went straight through him.  any advice would be great thank you. Danni

  • . Hi Danni. Your poor dad has had a really tough time with his treatment hasn’t  he? Good to hear that he’s managed 9 out of 12 chemo sessions which is no mean feat.

I didn’t have an infection during chemo but I did after my reversal and my potassium level was low for several weeks. Bananas are high in potassium but the surgeon also recommended dark chocolate? While I was in hospital they gave me potassium tablets which are huge and have to be dissolved in water then drunk - it is a very unpleasant taste and I had to take a big slurp through a straw then a big swing of something pleasanter tasting. Perhaps his doctor could prescribe something like this?

Hope your dad starts to pick up soon and can get the last 3 under his belt

Hope you’re doing ok too - I know you’ve been such a support for your dad

    Take care

    Hi Karen

Thank you for your reply.. yes he’s pretty fed up with it all, he feels like giving his last 3 chemo sessions up as he keeps getting these infections, his urine looks clear though and when he went to see his surgeon last time he actually said from the urostomy you can get little white bits in your bag that can show as an infection but you don’t actually have one if that makes sense so we feel he may be taking all these antibiotics for no reason and keep stopping his chemo.. he’s also collapsed twice while on chemo aswell. He’s chatting with the oncologist tomorrow but most people have said to try finish the last 3 sessions so I think he will. He’s lost his taste though aswell with it. Did you loose your taste?

Bananas didn’t go down well went straight through him but I will tell him chocolate though and I will mention the potassium tablets to. thanks for your advice Karen it’s appreciated..

hope your doing well also. Danni x
