Hi everyone,

Well I think I’m ready to post on here now. Here’s my story so far...

Bleeding, lumps and discomfort last summer so went to see the doctor, he said (without any exam- just a little look) it’s haemorrhoids, gave me suppositories and off I went, no improvement, went back, given more suppositories, still no change so eventually he referred me routinely to hospital for treatment, this was in November. January I’d still not heard from the hospital so rang up and found waiting time to be 9 months.

Had a niggle in the back of mind that I couldn’t shift (based on the blood colour) so decided to go private for a consultation to put my mind at rest, the best £150 I’ve ever spent, had a digital exam and a rigid sigmoidoscopy to be told it was not haemorrhoids but a malignant tumour.

He said it was probably about an inch, likely to have been there for a couple of years but couldn’t tell if it was rectal or anal at that point.

This was only a week ago, I was referred back to NHS with the same consultant as he saw I was self funded.

Had a colonoscopy yesterday which confirmed a low rectal tumour but rest of the bowel was fine. Phew!

I’m thinking that if it’s not spread to anywhere else in the bowel then it’s unlikely to have spread anywhere else (hope my rationale is right!)

I’ve got a CT scan this Thursday, an MRI next Sunday then my consultant appointment for all of the results is 2nd March in the afternoon.

Husband and family have been amazing, although I think they’ve taken it worse than me! I told my 4 children (12,13,18 and 19) I was very open and honest but was very careful not to scare them.

I just want to know the extent of everything now, and start fighting this thing, the consultant originally said it would likely be radiotherapy and surgery.

Being only 42, I never thought this was even likely so it has been a rollercoaster of emotions but I’m feeling very positive!

Anyone else have a similar story? Would be interested to hear from you!

Thanks

Lisa

  • Hi Kristy,

I have been on to Saint James today for a pre assessment and to pick up my Chemotherapy pills. I start my first dose of them and Radiotherapy tomorrow then I get the weekend off from them and then it will be a case of starting next week Monday to Friday for the next 5 weeks.

I don’t know what side effects I’ll have as everyone is different but I’m sure they will look after me.

I’ll post further updates as we go on.

    Kind Regards

    Hi KevH

I hope your first treatment went ok.  I have no experience of radiotherapy but was on chemo tablets and although I had one or two side effects it wasn't too bad.  Tiredness was the worst thing.  Should you experience any problems get in touch with your chemo department for advice.

    Take care,

    VickiLynne

  • Hi VickiLynne,

It’s gone okay had my treatment about 4.15pm just got 5 Chemotherapy tablets to take at 8.30. Was surprised how many I had to take. I have 3x 500mg plus 2 x 150 mg to take twice a day at 12 hours apart twice a day.

At least it’s only on the days of Radiotherapy. So I will get the weekend off.

All kicks off again on Monday with my final dose on 18 May. Then a couple of weeks after I should be going over to Clatterbridge hopefully to start the Papillon Treatment.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi KevH

Glad to hear that everything went ok this afternoon.  I was surprised at the number of tablets I had to take.  It's all worked out very carefully as to the dosage, and it depends upon your weight as well as other factors.

I hope you have a good weekend and that the rest of your treatment goes well.  The 18th of May may seem a long way off, but it will soon pass, and I've heard very good reports of the Papillon Treatment.

    Take care,

    VickiLynne

Take care Kev. Have a nice weekend!

    Luv.

    Survivor.

  • Hi All,

Almost end of week one just my pills to take at 9pm then that’s it till Monday.

Mild side effects, bit of tiredness, slight nausea last couple of days. I seem to be going for a wee more often which when I raised it with the Radiotherapy people they said that was normal and I still had to drink plenty of water despite it. Don’t know whether the weeing is as a result of all the water I’m drinking or the pills?

Day before I started my treatment I had to pick up the Chemotherapy pills at the Pharmacy along with some pills for diarrhoea a and some for nausea.

So far so good I’ll keep you posted on how I go on.

  • Hi VickiLynne,

Week 2 of 5 complete. Was a bit Ropey yesterday, I think I had too mad the evening before. We had gone for a pub carvery on the way back from my Radiotherapy treatment.

Well I was at the loo quite a bit during the night and in the morning. So I took a couple of doses of the diarrhoea pills they had supplied which stopped that but then I had a bad dose of nausea so I was into the pills for that last night.

I was a lot better today so I am hoping it was all down to the indulgence.

So it will be smaller meals from now.

Just had my 9pm pills. So that’s it now till Monday.

    Kind Regards,

    KevH
