Undecided whether to continue with adjuvant treatment

Hi I am currently on cycle 4 of 8 oral Capecitabine at maximum dose and doing OK on it as a mop up following open surgery in December last year. My oncologist said chemo follow up would only be 5% increase in survival so very low impact I am now wondering if it’s worth doing the full eight cycles or stopping at six to try and avoid any long term impacts of the chemo. I do have symptoms but they are managable I worry that the cumulative impact may become a long term chronic condition if I continue and I feel at present there is little to gain (confused). They removed the stage 2 tumour with clear margins and all nodes harvested were clear only a microscopic piece of cancer was found in a blood vessel that they had taken out. The cancer was a rare cancer Mucinous carcinoma so I am wondering if the reason they want me to do eight cycles as opposed to six which apparently the usual is because of the type of cancer. I just want my life back. Is there anyone in the same boat?

  • Hi, Hope you’re progressing as well as can be expected. I’m in a not too dissimilar position, details are in my bio, with EMVI discovered by pathology post surgery, my consultant suggested further chemotherapy although with ‘limited evidence of the benefits’, his words. Having taken up the offer in the knowledge I’ve done everything I could to prevent return or spread I wouldn’t have regrets. I had my penultimate infusion yesterday, I’m on CAPOX, so now have 2 weeks of capecitabine to complete this cycle; continuing is a quality of life balance, so we are all different, for what it is worth at 58 I am still content with my decision to continue especially for the psychological benefits for my family. Wishing you all the best whatever route you choose.

  • I have the rare one too and mine did come back after chemo (I was also stage 2 with no lymph nodes affected).  In fact I’m due to start chemo again next week.  My main side affect last time was fatigue and that lasted about a year…. By which time I was getting ready for op number two.

my thinking is that I’ll do whatever I can to support my body in healing.

only you can decide what is right for you as it is a balance with quality of life.

    best wishes
