New diagnosis - what questions to ask?

Hi, I'm new here, having just had confirmation today that I have colon cancer. I've got to admit, I'm terrified.

I had an extended right hemicolectomy last month on what the surgeon told me she was 99% sure was cancer. I was really holding on to that 1% that it wasn't.

I'm recovering well from the surgery but have been told today that I am going to need chemotherapy as the tumour was definitely cancer, and that they found cancer cells in 7 of the 14(I think) lymph nodes that were also removed.

I have an appointment with the colorectal nurses on Monday 13th to ask questions and get referred for cancer support but I have no idea what I should be asking, everything is happening so quickly and more than anything I'm just scared.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

If no one from the group replies in time for your meeting tomorrow then you might find this advice on making treatment decisions helpful.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi  Hope your meeting today goes well I think I’d be asking

What sort of chemo will I be having and how long for

How will it be administered and will I need a port/picc line

What side effects can I expect

I know chemo sounds scary but sometimes its reputation is worse than the actual experience. Once you know what you’re having then please come back and we may be able to tag you into some helpful posts?

    Take care
