Vertigo if tired/cold/stressed since last surgical treatment

Hi gang,

I'm currently on a Stage 4 monitoring programme, following 2 surgeries and some quite intense chemo after my bowel cancer diagnosis. Surgery in November 2024 was my last active treatment, but since then, I seem to get vertigo if I get a cold, or am tired or stressed. Having never had it in my life until November 2024, I've now had it 5 or 6 times and it started just after the last surgery.

The team at my hospital haven't heard of this as a side effect before and I'm wondering if anybody has experienced similar or heard of it!

Thank you!

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

I hope you can get to the bottom of what's causing your vertigo as I know how unpleasant it is having had positional vertigo in the past.

  • Thank you! Yes, it's horrid and so weird that nobody seems to have heard of it as a side effect.

  • Hi Hammo,  who has said it’s vertigo? Are you dizzy all the time. Does it make you throw up? It’s just I had an episode last summer. Had to go to A&E   It could be. BPPV  Which is movement of the crystals in your inner ear. You can do a manoeuvre called the Epley manoeuvre. Which totally get rid of it. You can find videos on utube which go into detail of the symptoms and how to do the exercises. I’m was caused by lack of calcium. I now take a supplement. Good luck

  • Hi,

    That's all very helpful!

Yes, that's what my GP has said. I've had the manoeuvres done, and also do those exercises. They work and then it comes back after a while. I've had the anti sickness tablets and some eardrops (they've really helped) but it's still lingering. I've been referred to ENT as it keeps coming back.

Can lack of calcium cause it? Would you mind letting me know what supplement you take.

    Thank you!

    Chris

  • According to what I’ve read about it can. I take a tablet called ADCAL  which I get on prescription from the doctor because it’s quite a high dose. It's vitamin D3 which you can buy at the chemist but you need to take 1500 mg daily hence to prescription. All I can say is it works for me. I had a repeat episode in January. Just did the exercises and it went away.  I then realized over Christmas I had miss around 10 days of tablets. So I make sure I take them. It is a horrible thing to get

  • Just had a thought. Have you had chemo?  I know that can cause  vitamin D deficiency and weaken your bones ( breast cancer for me)

  • I have, but my oncologist didn't seem to think that my vertigo was caused by that. I developed it about 8 months after the last chemo following some surgery, so I'll mention that though!

  • Yes it’s the D3 deficiency that caused  it. Ask if your chemo causes D3 deficiency

  • Sorry to go on but it isn’t vertigo it’s BPPV  caused by the movement of the crystals in you inner ear it’s the crystals that need the calcium
