Hi everyone,
This is my first post here. Following surgery for rectal cancer I have recovered well and was expecting to return to work in a secondary school after Easter. I now know that I will start a 6 month course of capecitabine and I am wondering about people’s experience of working during treatment.
Other side effects aside, I am worried about the infection risk, especially in a school environment. I am a full time secondary school teacher.
Does anyone have experience of capecitabine? Or working during treatment?
Thank you ️
I’m a teacher. I had surgery followed by chemo last year. The side effects are different for everyone, I had good days and bad days but the fatigue is unreal. I did not work through chemo and only went back in January. I have now completed my phased return and I am loving being back. The risk of infection during chemo is high, I picked up 2 during my treatment even though I wasn’t in school. I made the decision to stay off based on the infection risk and to allow for more consistency for my students rather than me being in and out randomly. If you are covered by sick pay I would advise using it. I had 6 months on full and 6months on half pay. Good luck with your treatment.
Hi. I also work in education, although not teaching. I was really worried about infection, I am sure education environment carried wierd and unique bugs every term! I decided not to go into work, but my employer agreed to put me on project work and I worked 50%, just afternoons and from home. I had a fit note to say fit to work but less hours and resonsibily (wording agreed with my emoloyer). Education is full on, you need to give it 100%, realsitically you will have good days and bad weeks, it is worth a conversation and if you want to work maybe reduced hours (as a phased and therfore still paid full time), I wouldn't even try to work full time unless you financially have to.
Hi Mlle A my situation slightly different than yours but I’ve been having radiotherapy and capecitabine tablets for 3 weeks now and haven’t had any side effects and have continued working around my radiotherapy apts but everyone is different and I’ve been very lucky as they said end of my second week I would likely start getting side effects. Good luck
