Hi everyone
my Dad is going through chemo for metastatic bowel cancer but he’s ended up with an infection and dehydration, he’s currently in hospital weak on antibiotics. They said this is common to get an infection while with chemo and just wondered has any one else been through this as I’m so worried.
many thanks Danni
Hi dankel82 and I’m sorry to hear that your dad is struggling - hopefully the antibiotics will start to kick in and he’ll improve. I’ve not had a chemo related infection but I know chemo gives your body’s white blood cells a hammering and that’s often why treatments can be delayed if the count is down?
Keeping fluids up is important too so you could make sure he has lots of his favourite drinks in or one of those drinks bottles with the markers on the side showing how much to drink each hour? If the dehydration is caused by diarrhoea from the chemo then something like diarolyte might help replace lost electrolytes.
Hope he’s recovering and can soon get home
Take care

Hi Karen
Thank you for your reply. Yes my Dad doesn’t drink enough and we don’t know what type of infection it is yet but he was very much out of it Saturday and Sunday, he’s meant to have another session of chemo on Monday then his scan the week after. It’s just horrible seeing him like this but yes I will definitely be on at him to drink more water.
Hi Danni,
I ended up in hospital overnight while on chemo with an infection. I had to have 2 sets of antibiotics infused as well as a perscription to take home and I had to go back in 2 days to be reassesed. Chemo makes your white blood cells drop so your immune system is much lower than it should be so infections you would normally shake off affect you more - my daughter had had a bit of a cold during the week and that turned into something much worse when I picked it up.
Remember your dad is in the right place to help him with the infection and to rehydrate him. It's really hard but try not to worry.
Hi Bren
Thank you for your reply.
sorry to hear you were in hospital with an infection, it’s horrible isn’t it that sometimes just a simple cold can cause an infection quite bad.
My Dad blacked out and fell from the infection. He’s on antibiotics but it’s worrying as he’s got another chemo session next week before his scan but I don’t know if he will be fit enough for chemo now.
thanks Danni
