My operation is tomorrow.
I'm sure someone posted that it was a good idea to take some snacks into hospital.
I wondered what snacks would be best.
Has anyone any idea?
I didn’t take any snacks into hospital the NHS is simply amazing but the food is not. It’s bland I suspect to accommodate all of us in hospital. I was only allowed soft zero fibre foods. If I’m honest I had an appetite but it wasn’t like normal. I ate mac and cheese soup jacket potatoes etc and it was fine. Not inspiring but ok. I also had the jelly and ice cream to jazz things up. I think I was quite nervous about eating but I did eat. My advice would be see how you feel and if you fancy something get a visitor to bring it with them. You might have to get the nurses seal of approval first.
Good luck for tomorrow not that you’ll need it. You will be well looked after. ️
Oh goodness that for me was by far the worse part. At one point thought my partner was going to force feed it to me. I think I managed 200mls of one packet and I gave up. It was horrific. I’d managed tye whole lot for my bowel prep I think I was just so worked up. My surgeon laughed at me the day after my surgery and said my bowel was clear and they would never have known if I hadn’t called (in floods of tears) not eating and nervous tummy helped by the tiny amount that I dank.
Oh good luck! And with the prep! I felt so lucky I didn't need prep with the tumour being on the right side of colon! A bonus.
I was so hungry in hospital but alas the food wasn't great. What surprised me was how I was totally left to my own devices re food choice, one day was broccoli soup and curry...... I had a sandwich , felt a bit safer!
I did take some oat cakes, maybe too high fibre? Breadsticks? I found having them useful as I was regularly taking paracetamol and codeine so they helped my stomach. I also found mints helped.
Best wishes xx
Hi Clickoff,
Personally I'd not worry too much about snacks to start with as a lot will depend on how well you recover from the op, whether you will need a temporary stoma or not etc.... unfortunately I got a temprary frozen bowel after my op and so spent most of my stay on a drip with 'nil by mouth'. I only graduated up to 'sloppy solids' like yoghurt a few days before being discharged. So any snacks I'd brought in wouldn't have been useful.
Hope all is going well with the prep and will be thinking of you tomorrow for your surgery.
Hi Clickoff
I guess you may not be able to read this while in hospital but just wanted to say that I was thinking of you yesterday. I hope all went well with your surgery and you are back on the ward and recovering. Take it easy, let others look after you and when you are feeling up to it let you know how you are getting on.
