Operation

Hi everyone, it’s good to have support from everyone on here and reading different posts.
I’m about to go for an operation, it’s pencilled in for Tuesday, when I say Pencilled, it’s because I have been told I need to go onto HDU after surgery , so it’s a case of waiting for a bed , has anyone else been in this situation?

I have had a colonoscopy and they found I have a tumour in the colon , been given amazing support from The MacMillan  team , told I may have to get astoma so have been to clinic which was interesting.
I’m having an epidural pre op but just wondering how painful it is after the surgery?
I’m not a spring chicken but I have beautiful children who are supportive and are there for me , but I do worry about the outcome of all this .

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board. I didn’t go into HDU after my surgery but it was there if needed so I think it’s a pretty standard requirement.
I had a temporary stoma and the stoma nurses were really supportive and made sure I was completely comfortable with all aspects of it before discharge.
The epidural stayed in through my first night (or at least should have but that’s another story) and after that the nurses check with you regularly to administer pain relief when required.

It was my first time in hospital and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it went and how well the nursing team looked after me and checked that I was doing ok. My op was back in 2016 so hopefully someone will be along with a bit more of an uptodate experience.

Take care and I hope everything goes ahead on tuesday

  • I had a very different surgery that was more intense than yours will be. I was 63, no spring chicken but not really old either. I did not have too much pain unless I moved in the wrong way or tried to use my abdominal muscles too much. Remember to use your arms to help you get up. They will give you pain meds and you'll be comfortable.

I ended with 2 stomas and those were a bit sore at first but quickly healed.

  • Hi just wanted to say all the best for the operation! I went straight to the ward but I know HDU was there if needed. I had a spinal block and that kept me really comfortable afterwards. I was then regularly topped up with painkillers and looked after really well. I had a right hemicolectomy and am surprised how manageable the pain has been.

    Sending best wishes xx
