Hi everyone. This is a long one sorry. I suspect my husband may have cancer. Around 6 weeks ago he started to get severe diarrhoea with blood and mucus. After a couple of weeks of this he went to urgent care and was referred for an urgent care and was referred for an urgent colonoscopy. A few days before his colonoscopy he started vomiting and could barely keep food down and began to get severe pain on his left side. I kept telling him to go back to a&e but he wouldn’t and kept saying he would wait for his test and results.
He has the colonoscopy and they said they didn’t find anything suspicious but there was a lot of inflammation around his rectum and the beginnings of diverticular disease. They took biopsies from various parts and said he would receive a follow up appointment.
The days following his procedure he still couldn’t keep anything down and was eating less and less and by last Sunday he couldn’t even keep water down. He still refused to go back to a&e so in the end I booked him a doctors appointment. On Wednesday the doctor examined him and send him straight to hospital for more investigations. We went straight to an emergency surgical hub where they did bloods and he was examined. They wanted to do a ct scan to check for signs for diverticulitis but it got late in the day so they did an x ray instead and then sent him home and said to return Thursday for an ultrasound. Thursday he had the scan which and by this stage his bloods, x ray and scan hadn’t shown anything up. When the doctor checked him over that day he wasn’t happy with things so decided to admit him and gave him morphine and fluids and ordered a ct scan of his stomach. Friday morning they started him on iv antibiotics, he was still being sick and although not eating was passing small amounts of blood and mucus. So yesterday I went to the hospital early to speak to the doctors myself. The doctor has said that he wants to do an mri and a ct of his chest urgently. I asked if the results he had been getting from the previous tests had shown anything and he said yes but he wasn’t in a position to discuss them until he had spoken to the histopathologist on Monday. I asked about his biopsy and he said there is a lesion on his rectum that was shown on the colonoscopy and that they can be caused by many things but some of them are nasty. I asked if he was concerned that it was one of the nasty things and he said yes he is.

This morning the doctor has said his scans are booked for tomorrow and that the biopsy results will be discussed in a meeting in the morning. Naturally I’m freaking out. What are the chances that this isn’t a cancer diagnosis? My suspicion is that it’s cancer and the extra scans are to see if it has spread due to the servere pain he is in. They now have him on a cocktail of strong antibiotics and anti sickness medication as he’s said his aim is to treat his symptoms at the moment and control the sickness etc.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the board. This limbo time waiting for scan results and meetings is very stressful. I was told straight after my colonoscopy that they were 99% sure it was cancer and the biopsy confirmed this. They don’t seem to have had the same surety after your husbands but maybe it was hard to give a definitive answer due to the inflammation?

Generally only 1 in 10 colonoscopies results in a bowel cancer diagnosis and blood in the stools can be caused by polyps, diverticulitis, ibs, colitis, crohns. They do seem to have concerns about the rectal lesion so the scans will give them more information and a fully picture.
I know it’s a worry but he’s in the best place at the minute and will hopefully start to improve soon and be able to eat properly again.
I hope you get some answers soon and please keep us posted? The support desk is also available on the number below if you want to talk to someone in person?

    Take care

  • What a time you are having! I'm sorry. Waiting is the hardest part and it is difficult not to go down the worry rabbit holes. There's so many possible explanations for his symptoms and many nasty things besides cancer. I'm glad the doctor is taking this so seriously and your husband is getting treatment for his symptoms. Hopefully he is more comfortable now and you will both get answers soon. Regardless of the diagnosis, you will feel better once there is a plan in place. Until then try to hang on to some hope..
