Well hubby still in hospital-10 days- with infection. was due home today but kept in as they’re not happy with progress. So now looking at tomorrow.

So my question is, as the wound is weeping, i presume from the joining of large to small bowel, will a second operation be needed to stop the leakage?

  • Hi  Is it the external wound that’s leaking or the internal join?

  • Even if it's an internal leak, this might heal on its own. Healing on its own may require some extra meducal intervention (for example inseting a drain or giving more antibiotics). I am currently dealing with a similar problem. If it doesn't heal on its own, then surgery will be required but I am still hopeful.

  • I had an infected fluid build up after surgery in 2016. Apparently it’s quite common and can sometimes just be due to the bowel starting to heal around the staples in the join. My surgeon told me that they would only operate again as a last resort.

A scan showed the fluid build up to be quite large so a thin tube was inserted into my buttock to drain the fluid into a bag. They said they’d drained a lot off while inserting the tube but it continued to drain tor a very long uncomfortable 5 weeks although I was allowed home with a bag strapped to my leg after 2 weeks. The drain was then removed and my CRP marker was checked during my chemo to check that any remaining fluid was being dispersed by my body. My CRP level was into 3 figures but eventually got down to below 10.

Unfortunately I developed another leak when I had my stoma reversed but this was dealt with by nil by mouth tor 3 days, then water, then fluids, then normal food.
If I’m honest it was a pretty miserable time but it will sort itself out eventually

    Take care
