Our younger brother (58) has just been diagnosed with inoperable bowel cancer (right sided ascending colon) which has spread to other parts of the abdomen. We are now waiting to hear the results of a PET scan to see if it has spread elsewhere. We are all in shock and hoping that with chemo and possible other interventions (as yet unknown to us) that he will have some more good years with his loved ones and friends.
There is a strong bowel cancer history in the family though our FIT tests have so far come back as negative- despite this my brother is in this horrible situation. I am in the process of also getting a check up colonoscopy.
Any info on best practice and guidelines for both my brother and I would be much appreciated, also any accounts of people living with such a diagnosis would be helpful as one tends to think the worst but wants have some realistic hope.
Thank you
Hi SonofJandB
Welcome to the forum . Sorry to hear about your brother but there are many people that do well on treatment .
I thought this might help you get a feel for how they manage a spread . It’s a good insightful read .
The practice is pretty universal . Governed but the Nice guidelines if you live in England and the Scottish body for our area but they are practically identical .
You can Google them to get a feel for it .
They are inclined to go straight to chemo . Lets them work on the visible and microsatellite disease . But they rescan and add in any other option open to them.
Sounds as though he has a strong team behind him .
I wish him every success .
