Just got back from the consultant with my husband. After six months of chemo and then a clear scan in June he now has multiple small mets on lungs and liver. I. Utterly devastated and don’t know what to do, I don’t know if there is any hope with cancer that’s returned this fast and aggressively.

  • Hi Vonnie5 welcome to the forum. I am so very sorry to hear your news. Cancer really is the gift that keeps on giving isnt it. There s always hope so dont give up yet they may have a plan as yet and wonder if they have said that or not? If not its worth asking them what's next? Sending some huge big hugs your way for now.

  • Oh I am so sorry to read this and take the time you need to process it . Microscopic disease can be slowly growing in the background but that does not mean he won’t respond to treatment .

There are people on the boards that stay on maintenance chemo for several years , some currently 7 and 8 years in .

Not everyone has that outcome but my own mum

    managed 15 years after a spread .

But it’s a blow for sure and it takes time to adjust and find your feet in different ways for you both .
    Ask anything you like ,

    Take care ,

  • I'm sorry to hear about your husband. It's devastating news but by no means is the situation hopeless. As court says, people can and do survive a long time... a few are even "cured" after such setbacks.

    Sending you many hugs.

  • Thank you for responding, I feel so devastated right now and don’t know which way to turn. It does help to hear from people.

  • Hi Vonnie5,

I was Stage 4 within a year of my bowel resection and post op chemo. It’s coming up to 18 months since I received that news. My mets are in my lymph nodes and bones so absolutely nothing they can do for me. Without sounding crass and having read numerous posts on this forum with the liver and lungs there are options, which might give you both more time than you currently think.

Wishing you both all the best.

  • Thank you, I hope you continue to be ok.

  • Hi Court. Fatigue is becoming a big issue even with pacing. That said I’ve been to Twickenham the last couple of Saturdays to watch England lose at the rugby!

Have a blood test and scan next week and see my oncologist the following week. We’ll see what she says but I’m currently not making plans beyond NYE. That said I’ll hopefully get to see the end of this rugby season.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

  • firstly i am so sorry- what a traumatic meeting that must have been. If he is now stage IV and has not been ask for testing for mutations like KRAS and Braf- they could be the reason it's been aggressive- I am Braf- there is targeted treatment for that and knowing the mutations can help with finding the right next treatments. Obviously if you do have those already then that advice won't help but if you don't it may well. It was obviously a huge shock but at the next meeting I'd ask the options, you can have surgery and ablation on livers and lungs perhaps after some different chemo. Really wishing you and he some better news and keep us posted if helpful xx
