Hi, I’m devastated that our son who is 30 has been diagnosed with bowel cancer , he has had surgery last year but it’s reoccurred local near original site , so now they are planning immunotherapy, I want to be strong for him but I can’t eat or sleep , I don’t know where to turn thankyou

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your son. Of course you are devastated!

Being strong for him means taking care of yourself FIRST. You can only give him support if you feel it yourself.

When you say you are not eating or sleeping, it sounds to me like you are in an emotional crisis.  We've all been there and we understand how it is. I know there are resources on this site that can help. One of the moderators will surely come post links soon.

Meanwhile, talk to people, look for things that relax you (some people use meditation or yoga, I enjoy being in nature but really it can be anything that works for you). You might consider talking to your doctor about some anxiety meds.

Technically, you are grieving. Grief isn't just about death but really it's any any loss... including the loss of your son's health. Even a temporary loss (as I hope this is) is still a loss. Be gentle with yourself and reach out for professional support if this doesn't improve soon. Do it for your son if you can't do it for yourself.

I will be sending you as much love and support as I can in a virtual environment.  Best Wishes

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . I am so sorry to hear about your son and can totally understand why you are feeling it . Have you been to see your own GP for some support ?

We are most definitely here to support you .
We have some really promising improvements with the introduction of immunotherapy.
My own mum had treatment first and then went back to surgery twice .

It is hard to think of him having more treatment particularly being so young . But hopefully this will be the last hurdle and be able to put it firmly behind him.

We have certainly seen that happen on the forum .

Here to chat at any time .

  • Hi

firstly I want to say I’m so sorry to hear this about your son. I’m 25 and have been diagnosed with rectal cancer so I can understand what it’s like to be diagnosed with this type of cancer at such a young age.

I have tried a couple of treatments myself that haven’t ended up working for me and have now been put on immunotherapy. My doctor was incredibly positive about this treatment and even said that in years to come he’d love for immuno to be the first line treatment to offer to colorectal cancer patients because it works so well.

I had a check up with him after just one round of the immunotherapy and my tumour markers have went down by a third! After just one round! I’ve heard from other people on forums that immuno does work wonders and I so hope it does the same for your son. I know it all feels so scary and I think my own mum feels the exact same for me as you do for him, but this treatment is good stuff and I have everything crossed for you guys that it does its job!

  • So pleased to hear you’ve had a good response and I hope it continues my love , heard the treatment can take some time so this is reassuring to hear, he now has a local reoccursnce in a nerve in the muscle so I’m trying so hard to be positive
