Hi everyone. Almost 4 weeks ago I had my large intestine removed, so now have a stoma and a pouch. I got home from hospital a couple of days ago, since which time the content of my pouch is generally much thinner than it was in hospital. I'm following dietary advice about avoiding fibre etc, and vegetables are currently non-existent in my diet. I will experiment a bit once I get to know what wirjs fir me, but for now, I'd just like to have less watery output. Can anybody let me know what worked for them? Thanks.
Hi Mat C There’s some good tips in these leaflets?

Have you spoken to your stoma nurse about using loperamide? They should be taken 30 minutes before eating and help slow down the food transit so more liquid can be absorbed. Marshmallows and jelly babies/wine gums can help too. You might also like to copy and paste your post onto the stoma board?

Hi Mat C, I had a stoma just over two years ago. I was lucky I had two friends that had stomas for several years so could give me advice. I found it quite daunting in the early days, but now it is second nature. To be honest I now eat everything. Veg, fruit, etc., but saying that I have found certain foods made me a bit loose (not many), so I avoid prawns. Like I said I eat every thing else. Its still early days for you and it will take time, but like me, in a couple of years time you will wonder why you worried so much. Do get in touch with your stoma nurse if you have any concerns, they are brilliant and will always be happy to advise you, hope you soon get this sorted.
Thank you for telling me about your experiences Mary. This is earky days for me, you're right, and I'm just getting used to things, trying iut what works for me. Vegetables have been very light on my menus so far, so it's good to gear you can manage them. I have an appointment with my local stoma nurse coming up, and calling them is on my to do lost today. All the best and thank you again.
