Rectal cancer

I have a T3N2 rectal tumour and after meeting with the oncology team yesterday was told I will be having 5 weeks radiation and chemo, then a 2 week break then 3 months chemotherapy, all in preparation for surgery.  I was not expecting surgery at the end and I am feeling really down today and overwhelmed.

  • Hi

    Welcome to the forum .

So sorry you are feeling unsettled today . It’s entirely understandable and often the meeting for treatment planning throws up aspects not anticipated.

I think it’s fair to say the majority colorectal cancers do have some surgery . It can take time to get your head around that but please do phone Macmillan if you feel any counselling would be helpful or just to talk to the helpline staff .

If there is any aspects you want to talk through on the forum as please do say .

Sometimes you just need time to absorb the details and let it settle .

    Take care ,

  • Hi Juliek,

I know it's a tough pill to swallow but surgery is very commonly necessary.  I am now healing from my own surgery. I'll be honest,  surgery was tough and recovery is a lot of work. But you are not alone. Lots of us have been there and there is support for every step. You are stronger than you think you are.

  • I have the same diagnosis and also feel overwhelmed.

It hits me some days worse than others , 3 weeks ago I didn't know I had cancer and now it is all i think about.  I have to prepare for the next 4 months of chemo and radio therapy in preparation for surgery, they need to shrink the tumour .

Saying this , I went to Pretenders concert last night and had so much fun,  I forgot about everything,  it made me realise , it is important to still enjoy yourself and forget about it sometimes.

We sound like we are going through the same procedure,  it would be good to keep in touch to support and compare experiences.

    Thinking of you
