I’m in a bad spot, I got diagnosed with stage 3 rectal, did tnt, drunk it to 2cm away from sphincter junction, my surgeon is adamant to do ape when he already said lar is equally possible, lar is so much better, from sphincter preservation to life expectancy, why is he leaning to apr???
Hi Lozthe1 I suppose that’s a question for him really? He’s maybe worried that he can’t get clear margins and leave enough to rejoin? There’s also the issue of LARS - low anterior resection syndrome - whereby some people suffer significant bowel issues as there is not enough rectum left to hold the stools which pass through the colon more quickly.
Have you thought about asking for a 2nd opinion?
Take care
