Hi Again Everyone,
I’m just over 6 weeks post surgery (lower anterior resection by keyhole and no stoma) and the last week or so I’ve experienced clear mucus and some slight bleeding (bright red in colour) when passing wind and opening my bowels. It’s not happening every time but has happened several times now.
My bowels are still pretty unsettled, some days I am going around 20 times a day but not passing a great deal each time and my stools have become thin.
Other days are better and I have a couple of more normal motions. Has anyone else experienced mucus and blood post op? Is this something I should be worried about? Should I be concerned that my stools have become thin or could this just be things still settling down?
Sorry for the details but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks.
I havent had surgery but they warned me I would have both those things as irritation with brachytherapy, which I do! Mucus can be an IBS thing or a sign of irritation or constipation and the blood could be just also irritation with going so many times and not passing a lot. So there could be an easy explanation for both, I think, but I would check it out with the team. I don't know about the thin stool thing but the colorectal nurses would certainly know about all of that.
Hi Craig123 I had my resection just under 2 years ago and I didn't have a stoma either. I do remember seeing the odd spec of blood a few weeks after surgery which frightened my to death. I also developed a tiny fissure too at one point which I think was pretty common. Believe me it can take a good 12 months or more for the bowels to settle into their new normal. It'll be a gradual improvement over time. My stools have been every shape, colour and goodness knows what during the recovery process! Always a good idea to stay in touch with the specialist nurses so they can keep their records up to date in terms of your recovery and can advise you about any concerns/worries and how to manage them. Best wishes, Jo
