Awaiting colonoscopy, terrified I'm going to leave my baby without a Mum

I have a colonoscopy booked after having blood in my poo and some diarrhea which led to a positive fit test and signs of inflammation. I just have a horrible feeling that I'm going to get bad news - every time I look at my very young baby I cry.

I know that Google should be avoided for any medical information but everything I've read says that once you have symptoms that cancer is already advanced and harder to treat. I guess I'm just looking for reassurance that even if it is cancer, I'll still be around for my child for a while longer.

  • Hi

Thankfully most blood found is not from cancer but due to some other condition that might require adjustments or treatments.

However you are absolutely doing the right thing getting the colonoscopy.

You would be surprised the amount of people who come through here in the same situation as you with the same fears who come back with positive news .

Hope it goes well for you .

  • Hi Mese welcome to the forum and i am sorry to hear how worried that you are. This could yet be other things and not Cancer so please hang onto hope until you know more.  Waiting for results is the pits so  we can all relate to that.

My husband had blood found in his poo after the FIT test and had a Colonoscopy. Despite the positive test, his results showed Polyps which were removed and sent for testing and were all ok and he also had Diverticulitis which causes inflammation but it wasn't Cancer. .

Ah Dr Google!!!! A wonderful tool, but not one to be trusted for Individual information which is what you need right now. The info on there is so generalised and relates to the population as a whole, but each person is unique and therefore any tests will be unique as well. So my advice is STAY OFF GOOGLE and stay here where people will chat and offer support as bets they can.

  • Hi  It’s good that you’re having a colonoscopy and getting things checked out. Only 1 in 10 colonoscopies results in a cancer diagnosis. There are quite a few other things that can cause similar symptoms like ibs, crohns, colitis, diverticulitis.

If, and it is if at this stage, it does turn out to be bowel cancer then it is very treatable. I had diarrhoea and blood in my stools for a couple of years (convinced myself it was piles) before going to the doctors and getting investigated. I was diagnosed in 2016 and I’ve been ‘no evidence of disease’ since my treatment ended.

I know it’s hard not to worry but worrying won’t change whatever is going on and will only upset your stomach which will make you worry even more. Try to distract yourself and come back to us and let us know how you get on?

    Take care

  • Hi ,

When I lived in wales my doctor flat out refused to refer me for a colonoscopy ,

When I move to England they referred me , for me i have always had weird bowel movements , but the pain in my stomach id had for 2 years ,

And then I had a bout of not going to the toilet and then having horrific stomach cramping ,

It was when I told the doctor my brother who is a year younger than me has bowel cancer,  she referred me based mostly on that , and I'm glad she did ,

They found a polyp that was cancerous,

    I didn't have blood etc ,

I would deffo AVOID Google it makes you stress out even more ,

My mother had same symptoms as yourself and they did a colonoscopy and she had divercullitus and needed to have some of her bowel removed ,

It could mean a lot of other things ,

Take each day as it comes , I suffer badly with health anxiety , straight after my diagnosis the doctor found a lump in my breast and fast referral for a mammogram , which I just had (no cancer but when waiting for the mammogram my mind took off with its running shoes on) ,

I know it's hard if your like me and worry no matter what,

But try some meditation , being around people who make you laugh to take your mind off everything ,

It helped me having my friend come and stay with me , time went quicker,

    Keep us posted hun

    Hi Mese

I had blood in my poo 7 years ago ...colonoscopy revealed a malignant tumour...Dukes A....one anterior resection carried out....no chemo or radio....  and then two months of  recovery....back at work.

The worst thing about the colonoscopy was the flushing of my bowels before the procedure.

    Good luck

    Peter

  • Total agree with that , the drink they make u take awful I had no sleep

  • Thank you all for your comments, I really appreciate it. I feel in less of a panic and have been able to take some deep breaths. I am a chronic over-thinker (and Google addict) which isn't helpful in times like these.

Whilst I wouldn't want any of you to have gone through what you have, it is reassuring that your stories aren't the doom and gloom picture painted on the internet of blood in poo = cancer = death sentence.

I went to the GP as soon as it started happening about a month ago, so there really isn't anything else I can do but wait and see what the outcome of the colonoscopy is.

Thanks for the heads up about the preparation before the colonoscopy  and  . Would you think that I would be able to care for/feed my baby overnight or would you suggest I'll need help?

    Thanks again everyone!

    Hi Mese

Flushing is over with pretty quickly..... its unpleasant but not painful....as for babycare....info required and help contacts should be with the flushing pack you will be sent....ask for advice from them.

Google should be avoided unless using genuine info sites such as Macmillan etc.

    Best of luck

    Peter

  • For me I was back and forth all night , It was painful for me myself ,

Do you have a partner or husband ? That could help you ?

If not could a friend stay overnight with you just incase ,

I was given one for the night and one in the morning ,

If you don't have anyone you can ask , don't worry yourself ,

If you get the packets to mix with water they take 2 hours to work , so maybe take it when you know the baby will be down for a good few hours,

Try not to stress yourself out hun ,

It was hard for me as I suffer with bad constipation , you might need 1 or 2 trips to the toilet ,

    Hugs xx

  • In a book i read it says to avoid google and if you really want to look up things without the awful "sponsored stuff popping up it says to use

    www.scholar.google.com

It gives you all the technical indepth information by oncologists and surgeons

    Hope this helps Relaxed️
