On my second infusion of chemo for bowel cancer. I have experience intenxe nausea and sickness. My third infusion was slowed from 2 to 3 hours but had to be stopped after 2 hours as I was so unwell. Has anyone else experienced this, and how was it remedied. Thankyou in advanced

  • Hi

You might find it helpful to speak to our helpline staff. 0808 808 0000.

My mum has some pretty horrible side effects and had a few approaches back in the day . Her infusion was slowed to six hours the first year . The second year they actually took her in overnight and gave her a very slow infusion .

That worked ! But they also reduced her dose slightly and that really helped with side effects .

Keep chatting to your team  and they may have other approaches that will help you .

  • Thankyou for your reply, that's really helpful. I'll have a chat with my team about slowing the  infusion further. Did your mum have additional nausea drugs to help?

  • I can’t honestly remember but others have . I will tag in   to see if she knows a bit more about this aspect .

  • Hi JEL,

I was given an aprepitant called Emend about an hour before the infusion. It really helped with the nausea.

  • Thankyou for your reply Cheryl, I'll mention that to my team too. I did have an anti sickness tablet an hour before then various injections in my tummy and bottom. But I don't know what they were called, I wasnt in the best of ways to remember. I need to ask them for a prevention rather than try to stop it when it's already too much. Thankyou.

  • Hi JEL

Very sorry to read of your reaction to the chemo. You don’t say which type they’re giving you. I would speak with the CNS as soon as you can to talk through options, especially preventative ones. I don’t know if it’s possible, but could they change the dose, or even the type of chemo?

    Every blessing

  • Thankyou for your reply. I'm receiving XELOX as an infusion and was given Apreititant tablet an hour before chemo. I am told they are reluctant to reduce the dose.

    Many thanks,
