HI

i had a colonoscopy on 2nd December where they removed a small benign polyp, but found another which unfortunately was not safe to remove.  The doctor at the time told me it was 4cm sessile polyp in my sigmoid? colon and that it looked very suspicious so he had took 8 biopsies and marked with a tattoo.  I then was followed up with a CT TAP on 4th December.  Then just before Christmas i had a notification an appointment had been made with the surgical team on 31st January.  I have heard nothing else, had no other appointments, despite ringing the team several times with promises of a call back.

I went on my NHS app to see if anything had been updated and the following letter has been sent to my doctor

The  endoscopist  noted that  there  was  4cm  malignant  looking  sigmoid  polyp.  The histology further confirms high grade dysplasia in the lesion. Further to the endoscopy procedure,  we requested a CT TAP,  which is reassuring and that she does not have any distant metastasis.

Further we have discussed this case in the Colorectal -MDT and the final out come is •  one of the colorectal surgeons to review MY NAME REMOVED in one of his clinics and to further discuss MY NAME REMOVED matter in the complex polyp MDT and take matters on wards from there

Does this mean i do or don't have cancer, please can someone help, the waiting is driving me mad!

  • Hi

We have a helpline and they could get one of the nurses to go through this with you and help you decode what it means . 0808 808 0000.

Firstly I am no Dr and it really does take one to give you a proper understanding of this situation . However you seem to not have that follow up .

Given the letter has been sent to your GP they can discuss it with you and take you through each step . I would suggest giving them a call .

One thing for certain this has no spread  to any other sites and this is great news in itself . It does sound as though they wish to remove it and that is normally done with curative intent so hold onto that . It is also normally done if they feel it is suspicious.

Does this help at all ?

We are most definitely here to support you .

    Take care ,

  • Hi I'm sorry you are having to wait so long. I was in a similar situation. I had my endoscopy and was told there was a large malignant tumour that they took ten biopsies from. I had the ct scans bloods etc and then my meeting with the consultant. I was told there and then that it was high grade dysplasia but biopsies are only taken from the polyp and not the tge base (my case). In his experience cancer was usually found in the base and recommended I go for the  resection. I had my operation two weeks later and was told it was cancer. I had got my head round the cancer so it came as no surprise. My consultant told me they wanted to remove it by emr but had this been the case it wouldn't have lifted and would have ended up with a resection anyway.

All I can say is there are different options depending on the mdt meeting but they are going to do their best for you. Like I said I was only told the day after my op but am just greatful to my surgeon for having that knowledge and go straight to resection. If you tell yourself it probably is cancer then it won't come as a huge shock but, if therre is no trace of cancer that's a bonus. Xxx good luck whatever the outcome is x

  • Ps it's great there is no spread and good to know there doesn't seem to be a rush to get you to the surgeon as it was in my case x

  • Hi ,

I should also say a lot of polyps are remove for preventative reasons to make sure cancer does not develop in the future .
