I have a mid rectal tumour T2. Treatment is downstaging with 5 fractions radiotherapy + 4 cycles of Capox. I have had two cycles of Capox. Yesterday I attended for my IV Oxaliplatin but my liver enzymes were high. A decision was made to give me the Oxyplatin but withhold the oral Capecitabine, a decision I am in agreement with. However, my fear is that my tumour will not be sufficiently shrunk. Sure, I am having surgery but my hope is that the least amount of tissue is removed in order to preserve as much bowel function as possible following surgery.
Would it not be better to add on an extra cycle of CAPOx? Or to take an extra 2 weeks Capecitabine ?
Hi PeterPandora
I'm sorry to read that your treatment has been affected by high liver enzymes. I'm sure that whatever has been decided is for your safety. I don't have the answers for you I'm afraid but could I suggest that you ring or email your specialist nurse to discuss the changes that you would prefer to be put in place. She will be able to liaise with the MDT re whether the plan is viable. If you would like to speak to someone in the meantime, the Macmillan helpline is an option and you may be able to speak to a nurse. https://www.macmillan.org.uk/about-us/contact-us
I realise that it is frustrating to have changes made to your treatment but the human body doesn't always do what is expected. Best wishes for the rest of your treatment.

Hi PeterPandora
This happens quite often . They normally make decisions from
the final scan . I worried when my mum’s treatment was reduced but the scan showed good shrinkage just the same . They will invite you to discuss this and sometimes they suggest a few extra cycles if clinically appropriate but others are ready from surgery .
Take care ,

Thank you for this very helpful and reassuring reply Court. How is your mum now? Did she have bowel cancer also?
Thank you so much for this informative response, much appreciated
