Slightly apprehensive

Hi all, I was diagnosed with small bowel cancer in September. I had a bowel resection which the surgeon said was very successful and he said the was a "slight" chance of some chemo being needed. The recovery was difficult - 12 days in hospital due to my bowel going on strike and closing up but recovery was going well once I got out.

Fast forward to a recent Oncology appointment and now I'm facing 6 months of Capox chemo starting just after Christmas. I'm firstly feeling deflated as i was just getting on top of everything and now I feel I have a much longer journey ahead of me and I'm much more anxious about chemo and the side affects than I was the operation.

Any sucess stories about Capox? I am really worried about the side effects and need to read some positivity about it!

  • Hi  and good to hear that you’re finally heading in the right direction - if you click on my name then you’ll see that I had a couple of hiccups along the way too.

Chemo affects everyone differently so it’s hard to predict how you’re going to feel during your treatment, The most common side effects are covered in the post below - you’ll probably get a few side effects but the nurses will keep an eye on you are there are pills and potions to combat them.

     CHEMO TOP TIPS UPDATED

Success stories? Well I worked part-time through my chemo and I’m 7 years still ‘no evidence of disease’. Go into it with a open mind - sometimes the reputation of chemo is worse than the actual experience?

    Take care

  • Hi BrenW

Just to add what Karen and Kath said, I had three months of Capox as a back up ( they offered six months of it on a reduced dose but I wanted it over with). It is doable and they will reduce the dose if you have problems. The result is that I have just passed the four year stage, clear,  and the combined treatment has worked. I had some of the side effects but they all passed.

I wish you all the best with the rest of your treatment

  • Thank you so much all for taking the time to reply.

  • Hi BrenW

i put a post on yesterday where I shared my news of the success of my treatment . I haven't had an op as they gave the treatments first. I had radiotherapy with chemo then infusions of CAPOX which I tolerated ok with some side effects which my oncologist checked in about and altered the dose.  At the beginning I felt just like you ie that there was months ahead of treatment and feeling unwell. Peuple telling me i was halfway there was very frustrating as they weren't going through it. I can now say that almost 8 months on it feels like it went really quickly. I hope all goes well for you

  • Hi Bren,

I met the oncologist yesterday to sign the paperwork, I will be having 3 months CAPOX starting January (I don’t have a date yet).

wishing you all the best with your treatment.

  • Hi Rachael,

Best of luck with your treatment. If you haven't done already have a look at the Chemo Top Tips in Karen's post. I had my treatment in the winter months and the effects of cold are the first ones you are likely to find but can be overcome with the ways described there.

  • I’ll have a look at the top tips thank you.
