Stopping after 4 CAPOX cycles

I've had 4 out of 6 planned CAPOX cycles and in discussion with the oncologist today she advised against doing the next two as the side effects have been signifiant. The next step would be an MRI to see the effect of chemo radiotherapy and the. CAPOX on the rectal tumour.

as happy as I am not to be doing the next two cycles k wonder if anyone has had a similar experience and how did it effect the final outcome?

  • Hi  It’s hard to compare your treatment to others as outcomes can be different - some people have a complete response to chemoradiotherapy whereas others have varying amounts of shrinkage. When I had my treatment in 2016/17 the Capox was given after surgery and 4 cycles was considered the new norm for affected lymph nodes. The giving of chemo before surgery was tested and introduced more recently and 6 seems to be the number given in this scenario. Your oncologist will have weighed up the pros and cons and, in their experience, the side effects were outweighing any benefit from the last 2 sessions.

Hope your MRI shows a good response and please keep us posted?

    Take care

  • Thanks for the reply. My oncologist decided that I wouldn't continue with the other two given the impact of the side effects. I will update when I've had the MRI, it's been a long hard 6 months so fBlush! I'm looking forward to having a proper period of normality with no chemo leading up to Christmas then preparing for the op in the New Year Blush

  • Doris58, I had 4 cycles of CAPOX in 2018, they lowered the final dose as it gave me a large blood clot not helped by the fact I wasn't very mobile. this year I had a genetic sequencing test on another tumour and the oncologist said that this showed that the CAPOX had worked, that said I finish a 6 month run of CAPIRI on monday.
