In shock

My wife had a colonoscopy today and they sat us down together, which immediately rang alarm bells for me.

The said they couldn't get very far into the bowel because there is a mass/blockage (can't remember what word they used) which they say looked cancerous, it sounds like it's nearer the rectum than deep in the bowel.

I think at this point the shock kicked in, the doctor said they're going to get an MRI and CT done,  they've taken a biopsy.

She seemed pretty confident it's cancer, I'm working on the basis that they have seen it plenty of times.

As you can imagine we are reeling, I am very information driven so the waiting for tests and then treatment is already painful, I guess we don't know what to expect and it's hard to keep the panic in check,  I'm hoping we can learn from you all in here...

  • Hello there, I'm extremely sorry to hear you and your wife are going through this. I recently also had 2 colonoscopy procedures and mine was cancer- my endoscopist was also fairly sure it was cancer in the procedure- I then had the same an MRI- the MDT will then likely meet and make a plan for your wife- I can only echo what everyone here says and the waiting is the worst part- and actually the colonoscopies even though they are so kind in them and do such a good job to make it not too bad. I feel better when I see the Dr and nurses and for having a plan in place and everyone here on the forums is lovely. Macmillan are amazing and there is so much support for patients and family so do reach out early- they are great for just a chat too- they really can help a lot. Will be thinking of you both and wishing you all the very best

  • Absolutely agree, it would be my dream too!!

A friend was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin Lymphoma… she had a full-on chemo package but her cancer had gone within 2 months!!!

  • Thanks Governor, side effects have increased but as expected.

Am fed up by my lack of energy tbh, even the daily walk with the hubby and dog is hard work… I’m resting when I need to but my life before the BST was so busy and that suits me better!!!

Hope your wife is doing ok?

  • Well we got some answers today and it seems my husband has three spots of cancer on the abdomen besides the lump in the colon. So a different operation, consultant and hospital now

  • Update, my wife's third cycle ha been delayed,  probably by a week,  as the Oxaliplatin is affecting her liver function.

The idea is to wait a week and then off the boys test is okay go ahead with a reduced dose, hopefully just a blip she we can get back on track next week!

       how are you getting on?

  • Hi Governor, sorry to hear there’s a blip and hope it’s all sorted soon so your wife’s treatment can be back on track. Hope she’s feeling ok and you too?

I had my first chemo on Wed AM, Folfox every 2 weeks for 12 weeks. I’ve got a little pump to wear at home for 48hrs too, go back for it to be disconnected Fri PM. Hoping the side effects will be minimal and bearable Pray

  • The Oxaliplatin side effects have been mostly inconvenient, a little nausea but not too bad, the cold sensitivity is probably the worst of it, devil's cycle it lasted a lot longer.

Obviously the liver function impact is the more serious, but they tell us that it's quite common.

Glad to hear you've started, when is your main op do you know?

  • Governor

I had an appointment with the oncologist before chemo started and he said if everything goes to plan then the op might be at the end of May! I wasn’t expecting to be told that & thought it would be later In the summer/early autumn but at least they’re thinking of a date now, even if it does get pushed back! I cheered as I so want this BST out of me!! Then realised I was cheering about having another op & remembering how rough I felt after the last one for the stoma Joy

The stoma reversal op will be after that if the resection is successful.

Has your wife been give any dates yet?
