I've had my very first iv of Oxaliplatin and by the end the vein was so painful. And any tissue or tendons moving near by would also hurt. But I was wondering if anyone had experienced a feeling like really bad sunburn where the arm and wrist if touched hurt. Even the hairs felt like when touched they are digging into painful skin. There is no redness or swelling. And the pain is now 4/10 not 7/10 after 4 days. I was expecting cold sensitivity and pins and needles (neither of which I have) but not this.
Thanks for reading this. William.
Hi @Ewill79. Yes this is exactly how I felt. I even cut the end off a pop sock and pulled it up over my arm as I couldn’t stand any sleeves touching it. I’m going to be honest with you and tell you that my next session was no better and I was close to tears as they removed the dressing from around the cannula and it pulled at my skin. Putting a heat pad on at home helps for a while but it’s a horrible feeling and it was the only day I had off from work as I didn’t know what to do with myself.
Im not sure how many sessions you are having but I had a picc line fitted after this which is like a permanent cannula in the upper arm. There was no more searching for veins and bloods were taken in and out from it - it was a game changer for me.
Theres often a couple of weeks wait to get one fitted so if you’re only having say 4 sessions they might not be too keen to do it. If you speak to the chemo nurses then they can usually give you a heat pad during your treatment and also slowing the infusion down can help too.
Hope this helps
Take care

Definately ask for a line or port putting in. My veins were shot to bits after a couple of hospital stays and the line was such a relief. Yes I felt better with the cancer than after they’d removed it! It definately is rubbish but keep posting and we’ll help you get through this x
