Type 2 diabetes and chemotherapy

Afternoon everyone,

I am after a bit of advice for my husband.

He is type 2 diabetic and has had his first session of Chemo on Tuesday. They told him he has to keep his blood sugars under control otherwise they will have to cancel chemotherapy.

Obviously we want to try and sort things out but his readings are all over the place.

Has anybody got any advice or tips on what is best to eat and drink, it is getting him really down at the minute.

Thank you x

  • Hi There!

My late husband had type 2 diabetes. I can't really recall if they told him to keep his blood sugars controlled before chemotherapy or not but they told him just to eat as normal and this included him still sticking to his diet and food habits he was eating at the time. He unfortunately lost his fight in June this year after battling his cancer for 2 years. Sepsis was also thrown into the mix so think it was a combination of the two that eventually finished him. Hope things go well for your husband. Best Wishes.

  • Hi Vicky,

So sorry to hear of the loss of your husband to this awful disease.

My husband has to go for his 2nd session of Chemo on 26th September and hopefully we can get his bloods right for then.

It is so hard as obviously we need to get it sorted on top of the cancer.

Hope you are ok and thanks for replying.

  • Hi Kell,

I can only give you my advice going of my experience but I was diagnosed T2 6 years ago and have been in remission ever since by changing my diet.

I did it by cutting out carbohydrates and going keto, I wouldn't recommend doing that now as he is undergoing chemo ( im on my 5th session ) but try to stop eating bread, pasta, rice, white starchy foods, cut out sweats, yes I know all the good stuff :(

Eat more fish, white meat and fruit and veg Slight smile

    Hope this helps.

BTW my oncologist told me last week that the steroids they give you during chemo will elevate sugar levels ... go figure :/

  • Hi Towny67

Yes that's correct steroids can elevate sugar levels. They looked to do this with my husband  I remember but with him having the T2 diabetes they said it could raise his sugar levels and so decided against it.
