Help with inconclusive results

I was referred for a colonoscopy after a positive fit test and being concerned about noticeable change in bowel habits. On most occasions there was blood in my poo and had increasing urgency to go the loo.

I had the colonoscopy three weeks ago. Post procedure myself and my husband were asked to speak to the doctor who said he found two polyps one he removed but the other he was more concerned about and could be bowel cancer. We were told results were marked as urgent and should be back in a week. Fast forward to now (which was the worst three weeks of my life) and I finally got a call from the nurse to say results were inconclusive and with no guidance on what will happen next as she hadn’t managed to speak the doctor and since it is Friday looks like it will be another weekend of the unknown. How often does this happen that results are inconclusive?? Will this mean another colonoscopy as this thought fills me with dread, and what then? Further weeks of waits for results? I feel so helpless and as a mum of two trying to maintain the outward appearance of all being fine is so hard. Any help or advice?

  • Hi Jen1405 I’m so sorry to hear about your current situation. Unfortunately, you’re not alone in waiting a long time for results, nor in being told the findings were inconclusive. Did your hospital not give you a contact? I know it’s easier said than done, but do try not to come to a worst case conclusion. My sister had a similar experience only last month. She was told she had a mass and that it was likely cancer. Five long weeks later and she was told it was a polyp. Another four weeks before she was told it was NOT cancer. If you don’t have a contact number for the hospital, maybe give Macmillan a call? Their volunteers are very kind, or speak to a nurse. The nurses can give you a general idea of their experience. Sending you a big virtual hug.
