Good evening folks,
This morning I received some upsetting news, that my resection planned for Thursday has been cancelled.
All I have been told is that my consultant will not be in hospital this week, but may be back next Monday.
As you can imagine having to go through the mental process of psyching myself ready to go has been difficult and mentally draining.
How do I now refocus without having a date to aim for.
We had everything in place, my son and daughter taking staggered days off work to help me and their mum.
Its been difficult enough without all this added stress.
Ta, Robert.
It is rotten Robby63 but it happens so often now . Surgeons don’t organise their own lists most times now . There is a separate manager for that . Sometimes it shows !!!
The summer brings further problems with the holidays pushing things back .
However most are taken the second time . You could ask due to the distress if you can be first on the list and avoid being the last one cancelled !
I don’t think people realise the psychological impact it has on people and the preparations family have made .
I got my friend to prepare her husband and it happened to him too!
You could also email the secretary and ask for a new date too!
You have my every sympathy.

Thank you for replying, it affects the whole family with the arrangements they had made.
I have another dillema, my wife and I were going on a family holiday to Tenerife in September, however we cancelled because I obviously wouldn't be fit enough after the operation.
They are around 16 of our family going in this holiday and I don't want my son, daughter and grandkids cancelling if I am rescheduled around that time.
Would it be proper for me to tell them I would be operated when they got back, knowing I was scheduled when they were in holiday.
I know my son and daughter would want to be here to support mum.
Robby
Hi Robby63
court is right that others do scheduling and impact of holidays. Sadly strikes are also impacting backlogs from covid times. And then consultants do get sick too. It can be an extra unsettling time for us right now.
If I try really hard to look for objectivity, i do read about delays can happen from patients sides too, so occassionally we are the cause too.
My own next steps have been delayed, so I understand some of the emotional and logistical uphevial. While I appreciate you're ideal would be a large family gathering, could an option be for you to use this sudden free time to do a mini break with wider family and then let them stagger their main time off to be able to help you and their mum in smaller stints over the coming weeks?
Perhaps openly chat with them as to their preferences - some may prefer not to holiday anytime around your op, others may be happy to. Others may want to help get you in the best state before op, and so on.
I would however recommend not delaying your op from your side. And you can ask to be notified of late notice cancellation slots if you can be flexible, to help offset your consultants delay.
Thanks for your response, it's was made more disappointing, simply because over the past 3 years since my diagnosis, I haven't had any appointments cancelled of which they were many as you will know.
We are fortunate here in Scotland that we haven't had any strikes whatsoever with our NHS, but I do understand covid could be an issue, which my daughter commented on.
Many thanks.
Hi Robby63
I would like to think you would get rescheduled before September. School holidays are over in another couple of weeks in Scotland so hopefully that should settle things . As you say we are not negotiating strikes either . So I am holding out that next week brings some better news for you .
I do feel for the poor kids !! What. A wet summer they have had .
