  • I've been reading so many of these threads for a long time and also ready the stories on the site of young people in particular who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

I'm 29 and have been experiencing bleeding from my back passage for over a year. I have a consultant who has overtime discovered the bleeding is most likely coming from higher up. Due to the colour, clotting, amount and lack of haemeriods. Due to the amount of bleeding I have they have not done a fit test as I have visible blood in my poo, in the toilet bowl and on tissue. My symptoms have reached a peak of severity and currently I have severe lower abdominal pain, more so to my left and my lower back. Sometimes down my thighs. I go from diarrhea to constipation and vice versa frequently.

My consultant has put me on the waiting list for a colonoscopy. I'm extremely nervous about what they might find. However I feel like because of how much investigating I've been through in the last ,5 months I'm almost ready for answers to know what I'm dealing with.

I suppose I'm looking for support, honest comments and perhaps anyone that has experienced similar symptoms with either a diagnosis or amounted to something less sinister.

Trying to also be incredibly considerate to those of you that have been diagnosed.

  • Hi Sophie, getting these types of symptoms is always worrying but it could be a multitude of things - has anyone mentioned ulcers if it is thought to come from higher up? I guess the medical team will have to use different diagnostic tools to eliminate different diagnoses. I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2019, aged 42, and have been on and off treatment since so I understand how stressful the wait for appointments and results can be! Hopefully you get a date for the colonoscopy soon, but don't hesitate to chase if you don't hear anything. When I get referred to a different consultant or for a scan etc., I now give them a week to get back to me otherwise I ring up every service involved! There has been a couple of times when the doctor forgot to send the referral so I make sure I am proactive.

Good luck with it all, hopefully you get a positive outcome soon!

    Take care,

    Cecile x

  • Thankyou for coming back to me cecille, how are you getting on with your journey with it all?

Your message prompted me to call the waiting list line and I'm now going to chat with my go this afternoon to get him to speed things up, so thankyou. I should be seen by the end of July but it could be a couple of weeks after that due to the back log. Just feels so long away so I hope the GP can speed things up, especially knowing I started with these symptoms over a year ago. Can't help have a little thought at the back of your mind.

  • Hi Swalker109 I’m so sorry you have such a long wait just for a colonoscopy. It really does seem to be yet another postcode lottery. My sister has had “gastro” type problems and visited A&E quite a few times in the past. She was referred under the two week rule, and has now been given the all clear. Having had bowel cancer myself it was a really difficult time for all of us. I hope by the time you read this you have spoken with your GP, and that he can get the process speeded up for you.

  • It really is a postcode lottery, I'm glad your sister has had the all clear!

Today has actually led me to now being admitted to hospital and they are doing an endoscopy tomorrow. Very eventful today, exhausted from pain.

  • Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it!

    Good luck x

  • Hi  . Hope the endoscopy goes ok and they are able to give you some answers?

Take care and please let us know how you get on?

  • The consultant has come round this morning and I'm having a flexible sigmoidoscopy. This is because my lower tummy pain seems to be more to the left. They are going to sedate me because of the amount of pain I'm already in. Just got to wait to go down. If they feel they need to do a colonoscopy or CT etc after they will. They have also giving me an enema to clear me out before and I'm now nil by mouth.

Feeling g a bit nervous but also hopeful that it's something simple.

  • I’m hoping by the time you read this you have answers. Keeping everything crossed for a positive outcome.

  • How are you today Sophie? x
