Mri liver scan

I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in May 2021. I was then operated (Right hemicolectomy) in September the same year. Had first follow tests in April 2022( colonoscopy and ct scan) both of which were fine.

A week ago I went for a second ct scan and today I got a call to go for an mri scan on the liver. They said they want to have a proper look at the liver only. Just worried that they might have found something and that has just evoked past memories when I was diagnosed and feels like I'm in reverse gear. Has anyone experienced this? I'm trying to stay positive though but revisiting this forum would boost that positivity.

  • Hi  . It’s quite common to have things called haemangiomas in the liver - they are harmless benign cysts that many people have from birth and are none the wiser unless they have an mri on their liver. It may be that this was not mentioned during your initial scans or that they are checking that it is unchanged and therefore nothing to worry about? If it is something untoward then it’s getting picked up very quickly and can be dealt with very quickly.

Im afraid I can’t say 100% which is the most likely but it sounds like your team is on the ball and making sure you are being thoroughly checked out

  • Thanks Kareno62. Yes they were noticed  at the initial ct scan before the operation and I had to go for an mri scan soon after. My worry is that they may have changed in shape which is where the fear and anxiety is coming from. Moreso, the mri scan wasn't called for last year.

  • Hi

I am not sure if this is any reassurance to you but my mum’s liver mets were very fast growing . Rich blood supply and all that . Her lungs were considerably slow growing in comparison. It’s seems quite a long time since they were noted on your original scan .

They grew quite a bit within three months and they never bothered clarifying .

  • Thanks Court. I'll update when the results come out.

  • Hi Bertz I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in May 2019, had chemoradiation followed by surgery. They didn’t offer chemo infusions as it wasn’t thought necessary. I had 3 years of living life with the coronavirus about, so was careful, but didn’t become a hermit. At my routine scan they found that it had in fact spread to the liver. I had a resection within 7 weeks! That was due to my fitness and availability. I was out of hospital the next day. Most of us now know that bowel cancer is slow growing, and I don’t think, I’m no expert, that all spreads to the liver are necessarily fast growing. My tumour was 5cms, which had taken 3 years to develop. Wishing you lots of luck for your MRI. Don’t worry about how long the scan takes as they will want to get lots of angles to make sure they know what they’re looking at. Mine was at least 45 minutes. I can understand that this has knocked you for 6. You could’ve knocked me down with a feather to be honest. Take care and keep us posted.

  • Thanks Jools63.  Good to hear that your liver resection went well and you were out of hospital the following day. For me it's a waiting game. I'll update when results come out. Thanks once again.

  • Hi all, I called the colorectal nurse yesterday Friday (7th) July) after anxiety had gripped on me for the Mri scan results. She told me I was discussed at the MDT meeting last Monday and the results showed that there was no change on the liver from the ones carried out 2 years ago after diagnosis. I take it was a thorough follow up check. Great relief! Although the journey is not over, I pray that it stays that way forever.

Thank you all for the support and I pray that our researchers and scientists keep finding new treatments that will cure this horrible disease. Always  stay positive. Pray

  • So pleased that you’ve been given the “all clear”! You must be very relieved. It’s always heartening to hear good news. Take care going forward.

  • Oh so pleased to read this .
