Hi all,
So we had our follow up phone call today from my husbands liver resection and the consultant told us that they got all the tumours and out of the 7 they took 6 had clear margins but one has not. They said that once his bowel operation has been done which is now scheduled the end of June they will do another MRI and look at his liver to see what is happening so quite a while away so if there is cancer time for it to grow. It has sent my husband into a real sadness we thought the operation was a success and now he is so scared that the cancer is still there. Can anyone let me know if they have had situations with non clear margins and they have been ok or been able to have more treatment to then have clear margins I just need to reassure him
Many thanks Al xx
Thank you court for your very supportive, lovely reply it always calms me down hearing from you.
we will see the oncologist next week so will ask a few more questions and in the meantime prepare for his bowel operation. They have said that he is best to have a stoma due to complications possibly arising so I think he is feeling quite low at the moment being only 44 I think it is all just getting to him. I am just trying to keep his spirits up
please take care and sending lots of hugs to you and your mum

Hi Gonzo
My mum’s first liver resection had one without clear margins . However I did think it reduce the tumour burden and the second op did the trick and that was the way it has stayed for 12 years .
It was such a disappointment. However now with radio frequency ablation they can also use this less invasive approach if suitable .
The liver surgeon did say the liver is different to the bowel as it needs a much smaller margin to get clear so hopefully the cells are still on the right side of the line and the other side clear .
It’s a thought for sure but more in terms of having to process another intervention. Long term they did just what they suggested . Rescanning in three months then dealt with it .
I think these set backs are more common than we anticipate but the surgeons do anticipate them and his liver will have regenerated by then . My mum’s liver surgeon said he would have gone in a third time if required but thankfully two did the trick .
Someone once said there are many steps to Ned ( no evidence of disease ) and sometimes it’s correct .
Send him my best wishes and hoping for the very best for him .
