Hi I’m 4 weeks into recovery after my operation I’m still very weak and sore I had a malignant tumour in my sigmoid colon which blocked it. So everything happened fast.
how long have others taken to recover?
I was a very active person. And I’m finding it hard not being able to lift or drive or do much at all.
I sit and cry and getting depressed thinking of the chemo treatment ahead.
is this normal?
Hi Debsan . Yes it’s normal to feel a bit down about it all and sometimes it hits you as to what you’ve just been through - there was a similar post only the other day
I was told 5-6 weeks recovery after a Low Anterior Resection and no lifting or driving until 6 weeks. Are you trying to get out for short walks and then up your strength from there? I had lovely friends who would take me out for lunch or a coffee then a walk in the local park.
Have you been told that you’ll definately be having chemo? If you can tell us which one then we may be able to give you some reassurance and top tips?
If you feel like talking to someone would help then the support desk is available 7 days a week on the number below. I remember feeling quite down and disheartened by it all but it honestly does improve over time and the memory of what you’ve been through fades
Take care

Thank you Karen
yes I thought it maybe 6 weeks till driving as I don’t feel I could drive at all yet.
I have been out for car ride and cafe visit and very short walks. I don’t feel strong enough for anything else yet.
my appointment is Thursday so will find out what treatment.
can they start chemo straight away or do they have to wait a certain time after surgery?
Hi. They tend to like to start chemo 8-12 weeks after surgery to give you time to recover and get your strength back up.
Hope Thursdays meeting goes well - please keep us posted?

You’re very welcome. We’re all at different stages of treatment or recovery so happy to share advice and experience - ask anything you like - there’s nothing too daft or embarrassing on here!
Hi
my journey is a little different but it started with a bowel reaction and it took me 8 weeks to feel closer to normal. This type of surgery can really knock you for six especially if all happens emergency style. Emotionally was harder and I have linked up with psychotherapists at Macmillan Local to me and although had only one session it was such a relief to chat with them and hear that my fears and worries were normal. my colorectal nurse specialist referred me may be worth asking.
I had my first session yesterday and it was ok nurses were lovely, today just feel tired and chilling on the sofa being annoyed by my neighbour jet-washing his car !!! haven't told them about my diagnosis as they will fuss way to much and cant deal with that right now.
keep me posted
Amy
Hi Amy
im nearly 8 weeks but still feel weak and cut sore!
hope you recover soon it’s all such a big shock isn’t it & knocks you for six emotionally also xx
do you have to have chemo treatment? Xx
yes had the first session today initially after bowel resection and removal of tumour I was told I didn't need chemo but after a follow-up scan as original CT showed a shadow on my liver they found secondary tumours on my liver 4 little spots so now I do need chemo. been quite the emotional time
Sorry to hear that but I’m glad they found it & chemo works and you stay healthy xx all the best
