I am on FolFox chemotherapy treatment for stage 3 rectal cancer.
I have had five cycles since December  which aren’t going very well will lots of cancellations of treatment due to liver enzymes being too high and neutrophils being too low ! but, my other concern is I’m loosing my hair in fistfuls over the last three weeks. Has anyone else lost their hair on this chemotherapy?

  • Hi! I was on FOLFOX 3 year ago, did 12 cycles, my hair definitely thinned a lot but I didn't lose all of it and it grew back as soon as I stopped.

Hope it is the same for you x

  • Hi sorry to hear about your hair.it is upsetting.

I was on Capox and lost mine but it did grow back once I had finished the chemo.

You can get a prescription for a wig, then either opt for an nhs one or like me pay a little extra for a private one.

    Al the best

  • Hello Loving Life.

I had 5 rounds of FOLFOX between March and June 2022 with delays due to neutrophils being too low and was advised not to have last one due to proctitis.  I also lost a lot of my hair at the side of the from and onto at the back.  It took about 3 months after finishing chemo for it to stop falling out.

I got a wig and really enjoyed wearing it and still sometimes wear it now. I didn't like losing my hair but felt it was just something I had to deal with.

Hope yours starts growing back as soon as chemo finishes.

    Best Wishes. Net77

  • Hi Loving Life.

I started lising hair after 2nd cycle and in clumps, so was easy decision for me to take back a little control and shave the remainder off. It felt great and I quite rock the look.

You can get a wig if you'd like from NHS which Macmillan can help access if your nurses don't, or Cancer Hair Care have a wig bank. You can even have fun and try a style or colour you've dreamt if being.

I also lost hair on legs, armpits, nose and eyes. For the latter it meant my eyes didn't get enough protection from the everyday elements. Options to mitigate this include Hylo Night eye oitment (prescription) or fake eyelashes (Pharmacy, Cancer Hair Care, etc).

Regrowth in some body areas slightly started on a forced chemo break, but more significantly after recently finishing chemo. It's early days so my regrowth is still a work in progress, but best things in life are normally worth waiting for.
