hi all ive never posted before, no idea how this works but would appreciate any advice or support.
my sister had colonscopy with biopsy and ct which showed she has colorectal cancer. scans shoe swollen lymph nodes in local area and not showing any cancer in other organs. she was told she will need surgery and is having another colonoscopy to mark the area for the surgeons,
she has her initial consultation on friday with her oncologist and i will be going with her. i have some questions and notes but id really appreciate any advice on things i should ask or be aware of?
thanks so much
Borris
Hi BorisBackDoor
The document I found most helpful for me was the pathway document from Bowel Cancer UK
https://bowelcancerorguk.s3.amazonaws.com/Publications/YourPathway_BowelCancerUK.pdf
And if your sister wants to have a sounding board about what questions are suitable for her (or to discount), I foubd the documents here really helpful:

Your sister is incredibly lucky to have your proactive and positive support - that can be a key component to positive outcomes, so well done you
It's good news that cancer has not shown up elsewhere!
Questions I would ask - Where exactly in the bowel is the tumour?
As she is seeing an Oncologist first, usually means some Chemo treatment before the Op. If so.....what treatment & how long for - prior to the Op?
Best
Marianne
it might not be oncologist it might just be consultant i just thought that was the sane thing sorry, its actually my mum but i didnt want to put that in case she is looking through these forums, not sure why!
theyve said they will operate, thank you for your help and advice
Hi again BorisBackDoor.
I hope you found the previous links I posted helpful.
To help you with terminology:
Each case is different and some people have chemo and or radiation before surgery, depending where the tumour is, etc. So obviously the teams involve can vary.
thank you this has all been very helpful, i hope youre doing well now
Thx BorisBackDoor.
I'm still on the chemo rollercoaster so looking forward to doing well in a few months time
Hi BorisBackDoor
I had the tests that was needed and after the specialists met with the colorectal nurses then I had an appointment to see my surgeon. He was so thorough and explained everything well. I was straight to surgery. I was given the contact number of my colorectal nurses as a point of contact if I needed anymore advice or support. My cancer was low and I needed surgery first. I didn’t need chemo afterwards. So we are all treated individually
I would ask where the tumour is? Is it chemo radiotherapy combined with an operation or just an operation
If there’s an operation write down the name
There will be others here that have had the same op and can advice
Hope all goes well on Friday.
Best wishes
Ann
