Hi everyone, hope you're doing well. I was advised to post this here as it relates to my bowel cancer mets.
So I had my liver/gall bladder resection a week ago and had been doing well but the past couple of days my scar felt very red, sore and a lump started to appear on one side. The surgeon wasn't concerned at first and I was due to go home today but last night he took a look and decided it needed further exploration. He said he would come and potentially put a small cut in the lump to see if fluid comes out etc. Anyway, between him coming last night and today I started bleeding from the wound. I went to the toilet and noticed I was dripping blood onto the floor. I could easily isolate where it was coming from and the nurse put a plaster over it but it's saturated in blood this morning. (Don't get me wrong, it's not pouring out of me, but clearly there's a bit of an issue there.) The nurses want to leave me with a bloody dressing, blood on my nightdress/bed sheets etc so the doctor can see it at it's worst when he does his rounds. Problem is that no one seems to know when the rounds might me and I feel concerned. Has anyone had 'pockets of blood' after an op or similar? Does this indicate infection? My BP is a bit low (but usually is) but other stats/blood tests feel fine so no one seems unduly worried but I feel like they've written me off as I'm last week's news! Any advice gratefully received. Thank you :) x
Hi Bibs
I didn't have the same operation as you, mine was LAR, but within a few days of coming home, I had a similar experience. There was a hard lump below my biggest scar which grew over a couple of days. I was waiting for an appointment with the district nurse when it actually burst through the stitches and opened up. There seemed to be quite a lot of blood which caused a panic! Anyhow, district nurse came and put a pressure dressing on it and sent me to A & E. After investigation they said it was a haematoma and seroma (blood and fluid collecting at the operation site). They made sure the wound was clean and then packed and dressed it, but they can't re-stitch in the same area due to infection risk. I needed to attend the district nurse every other day for around 4 weeks to get the dressing and packing changed until the wound eventually healed by itself. There was never any infection and it wasn't painful and didn't stop me from doing anything (except showering as it needed to be kept dry).
I hope the surgeon comes round soon and you get some reassurance.
Take care x
