So yesterday after what seemed like a life time of waiting (even though only 8 weeks) my mum went in for her op. She went in at 6am and was down having surgery by 9am.
I received a call from the surgeon at 12.30pm to say my mum's op went really well and they managed to remove the tumour and reattach the bowel, all done via keyhole with a slight incision to remove the tumour. No stoma
Went into visit my mum today in hospital and she was laying there crying due to the pain but thankfully the nurse came with some pain relief. Could only stay an hour and limited to one visit per day due to the infection rates with covid and flu at present.
Unsure as yet if any lymph nodes were removed during surgery so I guess these are the questions to ask when she next sees the doctor and yet to know if chemo is required.
It's a relief the op went well just need to focus on my mum's recovery from the surgery now.
Considering everything my mum looked immaculate I even asked if she had brushed her hair because you'd never have thought she had had major surgery.we laughed!
She was very tired as expected and all she wanted was a cold can of.diet coke which was a no no so cold water it was.
I think she will definitely be kept in over the weekend but tomorrow is another day and every day is one step closer to recovery.
I want her home but I know she's in the best place.
Hope everyone is keeping well x
Congrats to you and your mum Louise83.
Biopsie results from tumour and node removal can take quite some days. So it may well be about 2 weeks till your mum's MDT get to review them. You're mum is likely to be called in a couple of days after MDT to discuss findings.
Hope she continues to recover well and that pain management is now in place. I required quite a bit of morphine for about a week!
Thanks All. She wasn't too good yesterday and vomited as well. She said she is in a lot of pain and her tummy appeared a little swollen I am not sure this is the norm but imagine with it being major surgery it is hut She appeared worse yesterday than the day before. When i got home I gave the hospital a call and spoke with a nurse and she said she will keep an eye. Very worried as I was so relieved when the op had been done but seeing how poorly she was yesterday was quite upsetting x
Hi Louise. The vomiting after this sort of op is very common and is called ileus. The bowel does not like being manhandled and goes on strike causing vomiting - I had it after both my op and my reversal - felt pretty good for a couple of days and then it started. I was put on nil by mouth for a couple of days, then liquids were introduced, then soup and ice cream then it was ok. It’s very unpleasant but the hospital will make sure she stays hydrated and monitor her through it
Take care
Karen x
Thanks again.... I have just got back from hospital my mum isn't so good still being sick and her stomach is very bloated. They have put a tube through her nose into the stomach as they have said she has a lot of air in the stomach. They have also arranged a CT scan just to check no blockage but she has managed to pass a stool today. The nurse also said my mum needs to move more as at the moment due to the pain she is in she hasent been getting out of bed much but after the nurse came.and explained the importance of becoming a bit more mobile to try pass the wind which will help the bloating my mum did sit up and move about. I just hope she is OK never seen her this poorly x
